Hygge Life: How to Enjoy Quality Time at Home

20 October 2023 Leave a Comment

Modern life can be fast paced and tough. In a world that often hustles to the point of feeling burnt out, finding comfort and contentment within the space of your own home has become a cherished pursuit. This is where hygge comes in! So how exactly do you embrace the cosy and quiet hygge life at home? In this post we’ll delve into the heart of hygge living, exploring exactly what it’s about and discovering how to infuse our lives with warmth and cosiness, all from the comfort of your own home.

Creating a hygge life

Understanding Hygge Living

What is Hygge living? Originating from Denmark, the term “hygge” (pronounced hoo-gah) doesn’t have a direct English translation. It encapsulates a sentiment of comfort, an atmosphere of well-being, and an appreciation for the small pleasures that life offers. It’s taken the world by storm, offering a path to embracing the simple joys of life and revelling in the beauty of quiet moments.

Hygge living is about creating a space that radiates cosiness, regardless of whether you are alone or with friends and family. This lifestyle encourages a focus on mindfulness, self-care, and the recognition of life’s often-overlooked small moments.

I’ve been a big fan of appreciating life’s small moment for many years now, in fact it’s the very principle that my monthly Happy Lists are built on!

How Do I Live a Hygge Life?

Crafting a Cosy Retreat: Making your living space feel comforting can easily be done by adding plush blankets, soft cushions, and gentle, warm lighting. Choose a palette of natural colours and materials to add to that sense of harmony and relaxation.

Embrace the Art of Slow Living: In the heart of the hygge lifestyle is the art of savouring life’s little moments. Slow down your pace and indulge in activities that bring you nothing but pure joy, whether it’s losing yourself in the pages of a book, taking time out for a long soak in the bath, or just gazing out the window and admiring what’s on doorstep.

Nurturing Connections: Quality time spent with friends and family is an important aspect of hygge living. Meaningful conversations, creating lasting memories, and disconnecting from the digital world to be fully present in the moment are all part of ensuring that you really are spending your time with loved ones wisely.

Nature’s Embrace: Invite nature indoors by decorating your living space with fresh flowers, potted plants, and natural decor. This infusion of greenery can give you a sense of peace and offer a gentle reminder of the beauty that exists beyond the walls of your home.

How to Spend Quality Time at Home

Unplug and Reconnect: Designate specific periods during the day to spend time away from electronic devices and social media. Utilise this time to engage in activities that nurture relaxation and spark creativity. In an increasingly connected world it can be difficult to separate the online world from the real world and that’s when things like comparison and envy creep in. Take time away from social media to reconnect with your own life.

Also regular screen breaks are recommended to prevent headaches and eye strain and allow you to take part in an activity for fun not for work.

Indulge in Self-Pampering: Transform your personal space into relaxing spa-like room. Run a warm bath, light some candles, and partake in self-care rituals that reinvigorate both your body and spirit. Taking time out for yourself can be tough especially if you have a seemingly never ending to-do list but burning yourself out isn’t the answer. For some people it’s tough to get into the mindset that self care is important so starting small with taking time out for a pampering bath can help ease you into that mindset shift.

Culinary Explorations: When you’re on the go it’s easy to neglect good food by skipping meals altogether or constantly reaching for something quick and easy that isn’t that nourishing. Take some time to be a little more mindful with meals savouring each bite without worrying about how long it’s taking or what you have to do next.

I’m not here to tell you that you should be eating a salad or a plate full of veggies all the time either. You should aim to fill yourself with a nutritious, well-balanced meal but if you’re craving a big cheesy pasta bake or a pizza you should totally go for it. As long as you’re setting time aside to fully enjoy your food without rushing.

It can feel like you just don’t have the time for a proper lunch break, but I can promise that that time away is essential for your well-being.

The Gift of Mindfulness: Dedicate moments to mindfulness and meditation, allowing yourself to be fully present in the current moment. Find a quiet corner, close your eyes, and centre your attention on your breath. This practice can alleviate stress and give you time to reflect on your day.

Another good mindfulness practice that feels therapeutic but productive is journaling. Recording your thoughts at the start or end of each day (or both) can help your brain to organise all your thoughts and feeling.

Embracing hygee living

Embracing a Cosy Lifestyle

A cosy lifestyle goes beyond the aesthetic pleasures of nice smelling candles, plump cushions and snuggly loungewear. Those things can help but it’s about creating an environment that exudes warmth, safety, and relaxation. Embracing a cosy lifestyle allows you to set aside part of your day to escape from your daily demands and to just be snug, content and doing something for yourself.

If you’ve been used to living life at full speed and burning yourself out it can be tricky to adapt to a hygge life. Here are some small and simple ways you can begin to infuse hygge living into your daily routine.

Infusing Cosiness into Your Life

Attire for Comfort: Go for clothing that’s soft and comfortable. Think oversized jumpers, fuzzy socks, and loungewear that encourages a sense of easy movement. There’s no shortage of cute lounge wear sets around these days so it should be easy to find something that fits the bill. I don’t know about you, but comfortable clothes at home are an absolute must.

Warm Elixirs: There’s just something about a warm drink that makes everything feel better. Cradling a hot chocolate, a foamy latte and a steaming herbal tea provides you with a fantastic opportunity to take five minutes for yourself. If you’re struggle to embrace hygge living then this is a really easy way to start out.

Nooks of Peace: Create corners within your living space that call for peace and relaxation, that way you always have somewhere to go for a cosy break. Plump cushions and soft throws will set the tone for a little hygge life escape.

A Collection of Candlelight: Lighting candles is another simple way to infuse hygge living into your day to day routine. The gentle light they provide brings a sense of tranquillity to a room. Go for relaxing spa like fragrances to really add to that serene feeling.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating hygge and a cosy lifestyle into your everyday life is a poignant reminder to treasure life’s simple pleasures. Embrace the art of creating comfort, celebrate moments of connection, and carefully curate an environment that resonates with the serenity and contentment you seek. With an in-depth understanding of the foundations of hygge living and small details that can help make a cosy lifestyle, you have the tools to craft your own personal sanctuary—a place where you can truly relish the peaceful moments found in the heart of your home.

In a world that focuses on being busy, rushing onto the next project, hustling to the point of burnout, hygge living allows you to accept that sometimes life’s most rewarding moments are wrapped in the gentleness of a warm blanket, the simple act of a solitary cup of tea, and the intimate conversations exchanged in the embrace of flickering candlelight.

So, wrap yourself in comfort, sip leisurely from your favourite mug, and allow the hygge living to guide you toward a life steeped in peace and an appreciation for the little things.
