‘Getting away from it all’ is an instinct that practically all of us share, and an impulse which a fair few of us can admit to feeling after the most anodyne of inconveniences. Why shouldn’t we get to indulge these impulses, though?

Going away to decompress shouldn’t be a once-a-year thing, and certainly shouldn’t require you to pay hundreds of pounds towards a brief sojourn abroad. There are a good few reasons the staycation is back and here to stay, from reduced costs and increased accessibility to the sheer volume of incredible destinations to discover right here on home soil. If your feet have started itching a bit lately, why not consider taking yourself off to one of the following destinations found within our brilliant isles?
1. Coastal Escapes: Breathtaking Views and Fresh Sea Air
The first thought that enters most people’s heads when countenancing a domestic getaway is that of heading to the nearest seaside resort. Blackpool, Skegness and Brighton have their charms, but don’t represent the totality of Britain’s shores; that is to say, there are some amazing coastal locations that may not be as loud on your radar screen.
If you’ve a motorhome gathering dust in your driveway, and if you’ve got the motorhome insurance to cover it, you can quite easily post up in some quiet and devastatingly beautiful natural landscapes; the Jurassic Coast is an excellent place to start, being a dramatic stretch of south-facing coastline that you can travel along over a period of days. Another phenomenal option for coastal exploration is Northumberland – a blustery corner of the north-east, but with some of the most edifying cliff views you’ll find in the north.
2. National Parks: Nature-Filled Adventures
If you’re looking for complete untouched rural majesty, you needn’t look farther than these packets of well-protected and unspoiled public land; the UK’s national parks are well-beloved reservoirs of majesty, from the glacier lakes of the Lake District to the sublime mountain heights of Eryri National Park. If you want to be unbothered by anything but the incredible views around you, consider a national park adventure.
3. City Breaks: Culture, History, and Gastronomy
Quietude isn’t for everyone, mind. Some of us like to get in the thick of things when we’re away on a mini-break, and the UK remains a hotbed of leisure and cultural activity for those go-getters! London is an obvious choice for those not already resident in the capital, but it’s actually the north of Britain that holds the most staycation-y promise in this regard. York is a historical hodgepodge of crowded pubs and wonky backstreets, while Edinburgh offers cultural excellence par non.
4. Countryside Retreats: Quiet Escapes for Rest and Relaxation
If you’re looking for a little bit of everything, the best place to situate yourself is somewhere in the countryside – near a city, near the sea, and with the wonderment of the landscape at your feet. Where better than the Yorkshire Dales? The slow train from Middlesbrough to Whitby holds the key to some secluded-feeling villages, while keeping you less than an hour from the bustle of the city or the gothic resort-town fun of the Whitby coastline.
