5 amazing tips for travelling in the U.K.

After the last few years I don’t think any of us will take travel for granted again. Whether it’s hopping on a plane or even exploring your own country. While many travel rules are now easing and we’re all looking forward to having some sun, sea and sand in our lives again I think many people have realised there’s a lot to be discovered in the U.K. too. There’s a lot of places that can make for a fabulous holiday here. With that in mind, here a 5 things you need to remember when travelling and exploring in the U.K.

From the Scottish highlands to the golden beaches of Cornwall, the U.K. has a lot to offer in terms of beautiful places to explore. While escaping to another country is absolutely wonderful there are many benefits to taking some time to explore the U.K. too. While holidaying in your own country is relatively simple there are a few things you need to remember.

Pack for all weathers

We all know what the U.K weather can be like. It’s very unpredictable even in the spring and summer months which is when a lot of people will be looking at taking a U.K. break. If you’re heading off in the autumn and winter months then you pretty much know that you need to take clothes that will keep you warm and dry. But don’t think you can get away with just packing shorts and t-shirts for the summer! While the U.K. can experience some pretty hot spring and summer days, we still get a fair share of rain. Plus the evenings can be pretty cool so it’s best to still pack for all eventualities.

Don’t let the idea of having to wrap up warm put you off booking a break for the colder months though as they can be a great experience. I’ve had some wonderful wintry breaks in U.K. that I’ve enjoyed just as much as the warm summer breaks.

Insurance is still important

We all know the importance of travel insurance when heading off abroad. However it’s still a subject that needs thinking about for U.K. travel too, especially if you’ll be travelling in your own vehicle. Now obviously it goes without saying that your vehicle should be insured anyway. If you’re planning a holiday or your insurance is due for renewal around the time of your break then it’s probably best to be taking a look over your existing or new car or motorcycle insurance just to ensure everything is in order.

When planning a long trip across the U.K. or heading to multiple destinations then worrying about your insurance isn’t something you want to be thinking about on holiday. Get this one sorted in plenty of time before you go.

Make a plan

If you’re heading somewhere unfamiliar or you’re planning on a holiday with more than one destination then you’re going to want to make a plan. Even if it’s just a bit of a rough guide, it’s better than nothing. If you’re planning on a road trip it’s also best to have in mind the routes you’ll take and any attractions you definitely don’t want to miss or places you really want to eat. Even if you’re just heading to one location a plan is still a good idea.

Planning allows you to make the most of your time there and ensure that you do everything you want to do. Now I’m not suggesting that you make a plan that leaves no room to be spontaneous or have a bit of down time. But a rough guide as to where things are, what you want to do will make sure things go a little more smoothly while you’re on holiday.

Making a plan when heading abroad is a no-brainer. Its tempting to ditch planning for a U.K. holiday because things are more familiar but you could end up wasting a lot of time trying to figure out what to do, where to eat etc whilst your there. Surely it’s better to just immerse yourself in your holiday and having fun?!

Try something new

OK, I know I just said you need to plan but I did say spontaneity is good too! Don’t get so wrapped up in planning that you leave yourself with no time to just wander and explore. You never know what you might find! It’s good to just take time to explore somewhere new and make fun memories. Holiday’s abroad are often filled with new experiences and just because you’re going on holiday in your own country doesn’t mean to say you can’t achieve that here as well.

Head in to the quirky museum you stumble across, try a local dish, dip your toes in the sea, sip on local wines, beers and ciders, explore the backstreets, head to the popular tourist destinations, people watch. There’s opportunities everywhere to make memories and do something different.

Ditch your expectations

Holidaying in your own country is a tricky one. I honestly think there’s a lot of weird thoughts around it. Many people don’t see it as a holiday andspend too much time comparing experiences to being abroad. Having the same expectations from a holiday in Devon as they would from one in Greece and it’s just not realistic and it doesn’t set the right tone for actually enjoying your holiday. Get out of the mindset that it’s not a proper holiday and treat it for what it is. Just because you’re not jumping on a plane doesn’t make it any less of a holiday. It’s a well deserved break, a chance to spend quality time with the people you love, a chance to escape everyday life, make new memories, have fun and relax.

Sure, holidaying in the U.K. is a completely different experience to being abroad but we are surrounded by so much beauty in our own country. Why wouldn’t you want to take some time to explore that?!
