The best TV show Halloween specials

16 October 2021 Comments : 21

This is a guest post

This might be embarrassing, but I’m a HUGE sitcom-fan. Hey, I grew up in the 90’s, OK?! Laugh-tracks might be odd nowadays but back then we didn’t know any better. Even the laugh-trackless sitcoms popular in today’s era have most of the same basic staples: episodes are 25-30 minutes long, there’s usually a cold open, and they tend to feature holiday-themed episodes.

Along with Christmas and Thanksgiving, Halloween is a big one for sitcoms. Here are the best Halloween Specials to binge this year:

Friends

Episode: The One with the Halloween Party (Season 8, Episode 6)

It’s a shame that Friends only had one Halloween episode but at least it made picking my number one spooky sitcom episode easier.

There’s a lot to love about this one – Ross as space-doody, Chandler wearing a giant pink bunny costume, Joey doing his best Chandler impression (sweater-vest and all), and a pregnant Rachel really trying (and failing) to show off her maternal side giving out the candy. Not to mention Phoebe and guest-star Sean Penn (man, did Friends have the best guest-stars!)

The Office

Episode: Halloween (Season 2, Episode 5)

The Office had a whole bunch of Halloween themed episodes during its 9-season run, but I think the first one (appearing in Season 2) was probably the best.

Due to budget cuts, Michael was supposed to fire one of the employees by the end of the month. Of course, since he’s Michael, he’s waited until the last possible minute, which means he has to choose someone to fire on Halloween. Steve Careell does such a good job portraying the bumbling idiot boss and he’s able to actually make you feel sorry for him. What’s more, this is the first episode where we actually get to see a more human side of him.

How I Met Your Mother

Episode: The Slutty Pumpkin (Season 1, Episode 6)

It was a close call between this episode and the follow-up several seasons later (The Slutty Pumpkin Returns) but I had to go with this one. Lily and Marshall are adorable in their couple’s costume, of course, and Robin is her typical, independent self despite her new boyfriend’s attempts at doing couple-y stuff. And, then there’s Ted. Eternal optimist and hopeless romantic, he waits all night for the “slutty pumpkin” and there’s something incredibly heart-warming and sweet about it.

Schitt’s Creek

Episode: Murder Mystery (Season 3, Episode 6)

I love Schitt’s Creek – all the characters are ridiculous but Moira is especially absurd. Her particular brand of quirky eccentricity really shines in this episode, though, and she works to ensure that Twyla’s murder mystery party is a hit.

Modern Family

Episode: Halloween (Season 2, Episode 6)

Another series where the first Halloween themed episode was the best, Modern Family did Halloween so well. Claire just so happens to love the holiday and goes all out with her haunted house. Unfortunately, everything seems to go wrong (as it always does it sitcom-land) which makes for hilarious results.

New Girl

Episode: Halloween (Season 2, Episode 6)

I have a HUGE crush on Jake Johson and it’s pretty much 100% due to his character of Nick Miller on New Girl. In the Halloween themed episode, he’s in all his grumpy, commitment-phobic glory and I am here for it!

Parks and Rec

Episode: Halloween Surprise (Season 5, Episode 5)

Parks and Rec is another show that has a couple of Halloween episodes available and, while all of them are worthy, I had to pick Halloween Surprise as my stand out favorite.

The diagnosis of Jerry’s “Fart Attack” is enough to make it one of the best episodes altogether. (I swear, the first time I heard Tom say that line I laughed so hard I just about had my own medical emergency!)

What TV show do you think did Halloween best?

Yes, they’re a great alternative if you’re not into scary stuff.

This post is so useful for finding the exact episode that involves Halloween. We sometimes don’t get to watch a full film in our house, with a toddler running around. This is a perfect alternative.

Some great suggestions. The only one of these I’ve actually seen is Friends! I much prefer SCARY SCARY, haha! Currently watching the final season of You then going to go in and re-watch The Haunting of Hill House, perfect for Halloween!

Yes I prefer proper scary stuff too! Though I’ve never actually watched You. I’m part way through re-watching The Haunting of Hill House too! It’s such a good show.
