Ghosts – to believe or not to believe?

14 October 2021 Comments : 14

This is a guest post.

I am considered quite an anomaly regarding my belief in the paranormal, spirit world, ghosts. You see, I’m a sceptic. I am the most spiritual yet sceptical person you are ever likely to meet. Although this may be confusing as a description, it also adds weight to my stories of the ‘unexplained’ as you know I have explored all of the logical and scientific answers first.

The explained…

My mums house is haunted. That is a given, there are many unexplained things that have happened in that house. This story however, is not one of those things…

When I lived at home, I came back from work one night to find my brother waiting anxiously for me. I had not quite stepped through the door, or put down my bag when he declared that he HAD to show me something. Tired and a bit annoyed I followed him to our dining room.

“Look” he said, pointing to the window. I looked, I came a little closer, I looked again. I looked at my brother, who asked “Can you see it?”.

“Yes” I replied. Sure enough, I could see the ghostly print of a hand on our dining room window.

My brother, expecting my shock and horror, was surprised when I was unmoved by the discovery. That was until I opened our fridge. To give a bit of context, our fridge was in the dining room at this point. I wasn’t just grabbing a snack, mid story.

I leaned into the fridge, to have a look around and put my hand out for balance. Eerily, my hand lay perfectly over the ghostly handprint on the glass of our dining room window.

The unexplained…

As I’ve mentioned above, my mums house is haunted. One of the most common things that happens and happened to me while I lived there is that things disappear. ‘Of course’ you may be thinking. A family of four living in a house, things get moved, borrowed, tidied away. But they would appear again after a while…well after you asked for them back.

You might have heard before that other worldly types take objects. Most commonly it is fairies who are known to be quite the pranksters! You may have also heard that spirits take items or move them to communicate with the living.

So, my Nan (my dads mum) died when I was fifteen. We weren’t very close, as she was very ill for most of my life. She had what would now be diagnosed as Bipolar, back then she was diagnosed as Manic Depressive. We went to visit but it was hard to really know her, as the medication she was on was so strong, she was sometimes like a zombie.

After she died, I wanted reassurance that she was happy ‘in a better place’ as the cliche goes. I also regretted not knowing her better. I’d heard a good activity was to write a letter and put it somewhere safe, so I did. I put it inside a jewellery box inside my wardrobe. When I’d done this, I put my notepad next to my bed…then it disappeared.

I did all my logical stuff, I checked under the bed, the floor, under my pillow. But I knew, absolutely, where I had put it, I knew there was no breeze that could’ve blown it off my bed, and if had, it wouldn’t have gone far. I knew no one had been home, but me, since I put the notepad by my bed. Still I searched the whole room. It wasn’t an especially expensive notebook, it was just frustrating to me that I couldn’t find it.

Eventually I decided, from further research about writing letters to spirit, that my Nan was giving me a sign that she had read it by moving the notepad. So I bought a new notepad, and I moved on.

A couple of weeks later, I can home, opened my bedroom door, and there, on my bed was my notepad. Not on the floor, a little under the covers, peeking out from under the pillow. It was there, slap bang in the middle of my bed.

What did I do? I thanked the spirits for putting it back.

Anytime since then that items have gone missing, which isn’t often anymore. I have asked for them back and after a couple of days, they appear again. My mum, who still lives in that house, has a similar problem. She’ll often tell me that books she was part way through reading have gone missing. So I advise her to ask for them back, to this day, it has never worked for her…

Do I have a knack for dealing with mischievous spirits, or is someone on the other side trying to tell my mum something? We might never know…

My Mam has some amazing ghost stories from her childhood home, so she’s a firm believer in ghosts, but I’m still a little sceptical! x

I’m very much on the fence when it comes to ghosts. But I’ve also experienced things I have no explanation for.

i’m someone who believes in ghost. i feel as though i’ve had visitations from passed loved ones. your stories here are so good & eery! I think your Nan is trying to say hi in some way. I personally get signs from my passed Nana [ smells of smoke – she as a smoker , red cardinals in my yard or even smiley faces in my drinks or on notepads that weren’t there before ]. somethings are probably explainable but for some reason i find comfort in those signs.

It’s definitely nice to find comfort in some things.

I am also very spiritual but quite the skeptic when it comes to paranormal activity. I believe in ghosts, etc. I just don’t automatically attribute things to something ghostly. I like to try and apply rational explanations; for the most part events have been easily explained and unremarkable; but there have been a few times when there seemed to be no other option than some kind of activity or communication from spirits. This was so interesting to read and sounds like there has been something a little spooky going on. Thanks for sharing this!

I think I’m pretty similar to you. I’m very much on the fence when it comes to ghosts and paranormal activity but there are some things that just cannot be explained!

I totally believe in ghosts but I think that’s cause my house also seems haunted— a couple years ago my brother claimed to see a man in a suit pacing in our living room at night.

It was only when he was at my man’s house this year (after lockdown was lifted) that he saw a pic of my grandad who died when my brother was a baby. He said, that was the man he saw and asked my nan who it was—it was really surreal!

I used to hear children running the corridors outside my bedroom at night (and there’s literally no kids living here) thankfully haven’t heard it in a while (and hope for it to stay that way.

That’s is definitely weird. The story about your grandad definitely has a nice touch to it though too but I would not want to hear children outside of my bedroom!

That would be scary having things frequently move around.

Ghosts have always intrigued me and I’m yet to discover if they actually exist. Great read. Love spooky stuff.
