Straightening your hair is a great way to achieve a sleek and clean look and some of the season’s most popular style trends. But, as is the case whenever you put heat on your hair, there are some important techniques and tips you need to learn if you want to avoid damaging your hair.

Skipping Heat Protection
One of the most common mistakes people make when using a straightener is skipping heat protection. Heat protectants create a barrier between your hair and the heat to help prevent split ends and other damage.
Apply the product of your choice to damp hair before putting any heat on it, even the hairdryer. Skipping this step when using straighteners is one of the most damaging mistakes you can make so it should be your top priority.
Setting the Temperature Too High
Using hair straighteners that are using a high temperature is often a mistake, especially if your locks are colour-treated. Often, we believe it will achieve faster and better results, but excessive heat weakens the hair structure and causes breakage over time.
You can prevent this by adjusting the temperature according to your hair type and hydrating your hair as needed.
Straightening Wet or Damp Hair
Straightening wet or damp hair is a big no-no since it’s more fragile in this state. The intense heat causes the water in the hair to turn into steam, which can weaken the hair shaft and lead to breakage, split ends, and an overall lacklustre appearance.
This one is simple to avoid – just make sure it’s completely dry before using straighteners on it. If you’re in a hurry, use a hairdryer on the cool setting beforehand.
Neglecting Maintenance
Over time, hair products like heat protectants, serums and oils can build up on your hair straightener, reducing its efficiency and causing uneven heating.
Regular maintenance will sort this out. Simply use a damp cloth or cotton wool with a little rubbing alcohol to wipe down the plates when switched off. This removes any residue without damaging your straighteners.
Using the Wrong Technique
Technique plays a significant role in achieving the desired results while minimising damage. Avoid holding the straightener in one spot for too long, as this can create heat spots and lead to breakage. Instead, glide the straightener smoothly from root to tip in a single, continuous motion.
You’ll also want to avoid straightening the same section of hair multiple times.
