How to enjoy a socially distanced date

Ah dating, the time to get to know someone, spend time together and enjoy getting a little closer. Oh wait, this is 2020! The year of social distancing. You know that phrase none of us had uttered up until earlier this year. It does mean that hugs, hand holding and even a cheeky kiss are all off the cards though! So short of elbow bumping your next date, just what can you do to make sure you actually enjoy dating while socially distancing?

Where to go on a date

As rules relax little by little your options for where to go on a date grow too. Of course just because the rules are relaxing doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still exercise some common sense. There’s pretty much no where you can’t go now so really it’s just down to where you feel comfortable going.

Lots of bars and restaurants have created outdoor spaces now if you prefer to be outside. This has actually added a really nice vibe to a lot of places, providing the weather is good of course! If you’re wanting something a little quieter then packing up a picnic is always an option. Opt for pre-packaged foods if you’re concerned about mixing food from separate households.

For indoor dates try and opt for places that will be less busy, that way you can actually focus on your date rather than other people around you.

  • Wildlife park/zoo
  • National trust gardens
  • A picnic in the park

How to still have fun on your date

Dating should be fun but with everything that’s happened this year it’s easy to see why some of the excitement might have disappeared. A lot of places are doing really well with keeping people safe so do your research and make sure you pick somewhere you and other person feel comfortable going.

Sticking to your local area for dating is probably the best idea right now too which is why local dating sites like the Cumbria dating site or other local ones to you are a great choice. By staying local, you’re reducing the amount of travel you’re doing plus you’ll be supporting local businesses which as a great bonus right now. Local dating sites like datecumbriasingles.co.uk are a good idea for dating in the current climate as they’ll also reduce your anxiety around travelling and you’ll be more aware of all the good spots to go for a socially distanced date in your area.

Having to keep your distance on a date may feel odd to start with but once you relax into it you’ll be fine. This is why picking a quieter spot would be the better option right now as it means you’ll be able to get to know each other better rather than thinking about the other people around you as much.

Use technology

By utilising online dating it means you’ll also be able to maintain a good connection with each other too. Technology has been a game changer for dating so use it to your advantage! However technology is also great for virtually dating. With the ever changing rules it’s good to remember that you’ll need to be flexible so a virtual date could be a great compromise right now.

What to take with you on your date

There’s a few extra things we all need to remember to take with us when we’re out and about now and going on a date is no different. You’ll need a mask, especially if your date is indoors or you need to use public transport. It’s also a good idea to have some hand sanitiser with you too and maybe some hand cream as all that sanitiser can really dry your skin out.

It’s also important to remember a lot of things will need booking in advance too. Unfortunately you can’t just turn up places these days. So have any reservations or e-tickets to hand.

Finally you’ll need your bank cards rather than cash as you’ll find a lot of places are now cashless.

It is still more than possible to have fun on a date while observing social distancing rules. Just remember, do your research, make sure you’re both comfortable with the date location and most of all relax and enjoy yourself!

Hi Lauren. Wow, I thought it was awkward arranging business meetings – I never even considered what going on a date would be like! (To be fair, I’m happily married so it isn’t something that I think about anyway 🙂 ). Some sensible recommendations there for people who are looking to go on dates – especially the booking ahead point.

Dating during covid is definitely weird. I’ve gone on several socially distanced walks, picnics, just sitting in the park. The whole not touching thing is hard sometimes too. Great post!
