Today is International Cat Day and the theme for this year is cat friendly resources. The aim of this years campaign is to help humans make sure they’re providing cats with everything they need to stay physically and mentally healthy all in ways which cats will like. With that in mind I’ve decided to dive a little bit further into this years International Cat Day to look at some of the resources, how International Cat Day started and provide a round-up of some of the best cat friendly resources from around the web.

How did International Cat Day start?
International Cat Day was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Since 2020 the feline charity, International Cat Care has been the custodian of International Cat Day and as such now decide the theme each year. The day is a way to raise awareness for cats and learn about ways to help and protect them.
International Cat Care have been working to improve the health and welfare of domestic cats since 1958. They are a British non-profit organisation with a simple mission “To enable more people to act in a cat friendly way to improve cat welfare.“
What is the theme for International Cat Day 2022?
The theme of this years International Cat Day is cat friendly resources. International Cat Care has teamed up with animal artist and illustrator Lili Chin to design educational materials that they’ve been sharing over on social media. To support the campaign they’ve created two new ambassador cats, Domino and McTatters. Domino represents pet cats that live in a more traditional home environment whilst McTatters represents the unowned cats that will vary in the way they live and interact with humans (if choosing to at all). This is because pet cats and unowned cats need completely different care so the range of resources being shared can easily be distinguished between pets and unowned cats.
How can I get involved with International Cat Day?
International Cat Care have been sharing their cat friendly resources over on Facebook and Instagram for the past 5 weeks so there’s plenty to catch up on. Their infographics are also available on their website where they’ve been split into handy categories. There’s also lots going on today over on their social media channels with a live Q&A at 8pm (BST), a bedtime story reading at 7pm (BST) which will be great for introducing children to the idea and importance of caring for animals and videos and expert tips shared through out the day.

Thank you for sharing this information. This is important for all cat owners and lovers. Cats need a lot of love from us.
They really do!
I’ve not had cats for such a long time (since early childhood) but I know that being this well-informed and prepared for having them is much needed. I know a number of people who assumed cats were going to take no effort or care and found the opposite — really informative post!
Yes I definitely think there’s an assumption that cats are an easy pet to have and require very little looking after. It’s definitely not true though!
Cats are my absolute favorite and I aim to make sure my cat has the best care possible. I love how you shared the history of Cat Day and all of the links to helpful resources. 🙂
Thank you for reading! Cats are the best!
