The “mood swing” phenomenon is used to describe the fluctuations in emotions. Mood swings can make you feel like doing nothing and getting frustrated and irritated for no reason. However, mood swings are something that shouldn’t be overlooked. After all, it can have a major impact on your daily life and relationships with your loved ones.

Some of the common symptoms of mood swings in women include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Puberty
  • Menopause
  • Stress
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Hormonal imbalance

Mood swings can be annoying, but the good news is that you are not alone. Research says that more than 75% of women experience mood shifts between the starting of the menstruation period and the culmination of menopause.

However, you will be glad to know that there are some ways to stabilize your mood and improve your overall health to prevent future fluctuations in moods. Let’s discuss some of them.

1.     Manage Stress

Stress, depression, and anxiety are something that contributes a lot to your mood swings. It occurs due to big changes in life, personal relationships, commitment to work, financial problems, etc.

While stress is common, it shouldn’t take a toll on your overall health. You can manage your stress levels by practicing yoga and meditation daily for at least 20-25 minutes per day. Yoga is a mind-body practice that involves deep breathing, physical poses, and relaxation. Besides relieving stress, yoga can also lower blood pressure and heart rate.

However, if yoga and meditation are not an option, you can opt for massage therapy or talk therapy that can help you get better results.

2.     Sleep Well

Getting plenty of sleep can cure a lot of health issues, and mood swings are no exception. However, lack of sleep can result in irritability, frustration, anger, and sadness. It can also lower your energy levels.

Thus, you should aim to sleep for at least 8-9 hours per night. Getting enough sleep can support healthy brain function and maintain your overall health. However, if you are having problems getting enough sleep or you feel tired all day, it is wise to consult a professional doctor. The doctor will diagnose your problem and suggest the best possible non-medical treatments.

3.     Opt For A Hormone Test

Hormonal imbalance is another major factor that contributes to mood swings in females. Hormones are chemicals produced by glands in the endocrine system and released into the bloodstream. These hormones play a crucial role in your body. It is responsible for growth and development, metabolism, sexual functions, mood, and sleep.

However, a slight imbalance in the hormone levels can wreak havoc on your overall health. But how to know if you have a hormonal imbalance? Opting for an accurate hormone test can be your best bet. It can analyze levels of key hormones that impact your mood and other health conditions.

However, if you consult a professional doctor for diagnosis, it will become easy for them to suggest the right treatment option based on your hormone test report.

4.     Ditch Unhealthy Diet

The food you eat can have a significant impact on your overall health. Eating an unhealthy diet can cause mood swings. Some unhealthy foods contain processed carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries, causing rapid fluctuation in blood sugar levels.

Unhealthy food lacks minerals and vitamins that are essential for your overall health and they can trigger mood shifts. Thus, it is wise to give your diet a makeover by incorporating healthy foods.

Some of the healthy food that boosts your mood includes:

  • Bananas
  • Oats
  • Fatty fish
  • Coffee
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dark chocolate
  • Berries

These foods contain all the essential nutrients like omega-3, proteins, and vitamins that can help boost your mood and improve your overall health.

5.     Say Goodbye To Your Bad Habits

Bad habits like smoking and consuming alcohol have the potential to worsen your health issues. Alcohol is something that can worsen your bad moods and make you behave irrationally.

Besides alcohol and smoking, try to avoid eating foods that are high in sugar. Some examples of sugary foods include honey, brown sugar, fruit juice concentrates, etc. While these foods are delicious, they can take a toll on your mood. It can also cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

Thus, to prevent mood swings, cut down on alcohol, caffeine, and sugar immediately.

6.     Exercise Regularly

Exercising regularly is good for your mental and physical health. It can help you balance your mood at all times. Initially, you can aim for 30 mins of exercise at least 5 days a week.

Summing Up

Frequent shifts in mood are common. Whether it is due to pregnancy or periods, many factors contribute to these shifts.

To sum up, you can follow the tips mentioned above to prevent frequent mood shifts. If these tips don’t work, consulting with a professional doctor can be a better option.
