How to stay safe during BDSM

18 April 2025 Leave a Comment

AD – this is a paid advertorial but all thoughts are my own.

I’ve talked about relationships a lot this year on the blog and it’s a topic I’ve become quite passionate about but something I’ve never covered on here is sex. Turns out though that the blogging community is actually a wonderfully informative and safe space to read about and discuss topics that unfortunately are still a little taboo, despite being completely normal!

So here I am, providing a safe space to discuss an area of sex that’s probably one of the most taboo ones out there. BDSM. Thanks to 50 Shades of Grey BDSM has suddenly gone mainstream but there’s a lot of misunderstanding about what it actually is, because let’s be fair, those 50 Shades books were hardly great works of literature? So if you’re curious about BDSM or bdsm dating sites then this one is for you!

What is BDSM?

So you might be looking to seriously explore the world of BDSM or you might just be curious about what BDSM is. BDSM covers aspects of sex that can be split into the following groups; bondage and discipline, domination and submission, sadism and masochism. It’s often seen as quite a kinky form of sex and one often linked to pain but as long as everyone involved is safe and consenting it can actually be a wonderful experience that’s nothing like Christian Grey’s Red Room.

So whether your looking to engage in roleplay, sensory deprivation, spanking or you’re looking for a mistress. Here’s how to stay say during BDSM.

Tips for staying safe during BDSM

Consent and safe words: When it comes to engaging in BDSM being open and honest about your preferences is key. It’s great to try new things but boundaries must be established to ensure that you’re staying safe and actually enjoying it. Many people create a safe word for BDSM acts, this is usually a non sexual word that is spoken when you feel like that are going to far or you’re not enjoying it. It’s important to establish that the use of your chosen word means that act stops immediately and the situation is resolved to everyone’s liking.

Start basic: Practicing BDSM doesn’t mean you have to jump straight in with the more extreme stuff, in fact you never have to get to that point if it’s not your thing! BDSM acts can include things like role play, blindfolding, handcuffs and light spanking. If you’re completely new to BDSM then exploring and discovering what you like is all part of the fun. It’ll help you explore your fantasies and learn what works for you. If you discover a niche you enjoy then there are lots of places where you can safely explore your kink online, like the best sph onlyfans. Remember to keep an open mind and if it isn’t for you, you can always step away.

Keep it clean: Hygiene is important during all forms of sex but in BDSM there’s probably going to be more equipment and toys used so it’s important to keep things clean. It’s definitely not sexy but it is important to prevent infections. It’s not just sex toys that need to be kept clean though, things get hot and sweaty during sex so if you using things like handcuffs and blindfolds it’s also a good idea to wipe down or wash anything you’ve used.

Have fun: BDSM is about living out fantasies, discovering new things and just having a good time. Sex is meant to be fun and enjoyable so ditch the inhibitions and just enjoy it! Your version of BDSM doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s as long as you and your partner are getting pleasure from it that’s all that matters.

When it comes to BDSM as long as you’re being safe, there aren’t any rules. Make it your own and have fun with it.
