We’re all looking to save money wherever, especially in the current climate, so if you’re looking to protect your family you may be put off by the perceived costs. However, there are plenty of ways to find a cheaper policy without having to leave your family unprotected. Here are some easy ways to help you save on life insurance premiums in 2025.

1. Shop around and compare quotes

There’s always a deal to be found, so take the time to research and compare quotes from several life insurance providers. A quote is an estimate of how much you can expect to pay each month based on the details you provide.

Most insurers will ask you for some basic details such as your age, health and occupation, which can all contribute to your premium costs. Different companies offer different rates and cover options, so try to compare at least three to five quotes.

Don’t forget to check customer reviews and ratings to make sure the company you choose has a good reputation for claims handling and customer service.

2. Consider term life insurance

Term life insurance typically offers lower premiums compared to whole life insurance policies. With term life, you’re buying cover for a specific period (usually between 5-50 years).

Premiums tend to be more affordable and will only pay out if you die within the policy term. If you outlive the term, the policy expires and no payout will be made. So while term cover is cheaper, there’s no guarantee your family receives a payout.

There are different types of term cover with the main being level term life insurance. With this policy, your premiums and payout amount remain the same throughout the policy’s life.

If you want to provide financial protection for your family while your dependents are still relying on your income, a term policy may be the most cost-effective option.

3. Assess your cover needs

Before you look to take out a policy, think about how much cover you actually need. Think about your debts, potential future expenses, and any long-term financial goals you may want to cover. In doing so, you can avoid over-insuring and lower your premiums.

Typically, the more cover you buy, the more expensive your policy will be, though in some cases you may naturally need more cover.

4. Buy cover early

Everyone moves through life at different stages. Some people already have kids when they buy life insurance while others may not start a family until later. Regardless of your personal circumstances,

Generally, the younger and healthier you are when you apply for cover, the lower your premiums will be. This is because life insurance companies evaluate risk based on age, health history, and lifestyle choices.

If you wait until later when your health may decline or you have more responsibilities, you could end up paying more for cover costs.

5. Consider buying joint cover

At one time most households had one breadwinner but in today’s world, many families are made up of two earners. Whether that be parents, partners or spouses, purchasing a joint life insurance can often be a beneficial choice.

This type of cover provides a single policy that covers both parties, which could mean lower l premiums compared to buying two separate policies. If you or your partner dies, the surviving of you will receive a lump sum payout, which can help ease financial burdens during a difficult time.

It can also simplify your cover as you only have to manage one policy instead of two. However, it’s important to be aware that after one partner’s death, the policy typically terminates, leaving the surviving spouse without cover.

6. Regularly review your policy

As life unfolds, so do your circumstances, and it’s essential to revisit your life insurance policy regularly. Major life events like a new job, a change in income, relocation, or the birth of a child can warrant adjustments to your coverage.

By re-evaluating your policy annually or after significant life milestones, you can make sure that you have enough cover to protect your family.

If you’re unsure about your needs it could be worth speaking to a life insurance broker, they can offer advice on which type of cover may be best. They can also provide tailored quotes to help you save on premiums. Find your local broker to get in touch.
