Is there anything better than thinking about your forever home? We all want that dream house we can spend years of our lives in, making memories, and enjoying the time with our families. But, it’s one thing to have the idea and another to actually make it happen! When you’re in the process of thinking about moving to your forever home, you’ll want to have a bit of a guide to making it work. So in this blog post, we’re going to walk through exactly what you need to know if you are looking to design the forever home of your dreams. Let’s take a look.

Should You Buy or Build?

First of all, an important step in the process is to make sure that you’re deciding whether you want to buy or build your home. For some, choosing an old property and renovating it is the dream! For others, getting a piece of land or knocking down an existing property and building a brand new home is what they want. It’s ultimately about deciding what will feel best to you. From there, you can then get things underway.

How to Get Started

When this is something that you’ve been thinking about or planning for a while, the actual process of getting things started and underway can seem like a big job. You won’t always know where to begin. First of all, it’s a great idea to get your thoughts and ideas out on paper so you can make sense of what your overall goal or idea is. From there, you can then work through the ten steps below to help you get things underway.

10 Tips for Designing Your Dream Home

So what is it actually going to take for you to be able to bring your dream home to life? To get things underway, here are ten steps you could look to follow.

1. Hire an Architect

First of all, you’re going to want to work out whether or not you want to use an architect. Here, you’ll find that if you are building, then you’ll need to. But if you’re renovating, you could also look to do the same. Working with an architect gives you a full plan to work towards and maps everything out for you. Oftentimes, it will come down to the budget you have available and how you’re approaching things. Either way, you will need a plan to work with here.

2. Know What You Do and Don’t Want

When it comes to the design side of things, you’re going to want to know what you do and don’t want! And sometimes it can seem like you’d know, but actually getting things underway can make decisions a lot harder. Ideally, you’re going to have a feel for what kind of exterior design you like, the type of layout you’re looking for, and how you want the house to feel overall. If you’re buying a plot, where that is and the positioning is also key for you here too.

3. Be Strict with Your Budget

Then you’re going to want to set your budget – and be strict with it! Of course, maybe people will find themselves going over budget when they build or renovate – but that can’t always be an option. Instead, you may find that you need to bring it down as much as possible. But if you want to stay on budget (or even under it), there’s always a way to make it work!

4. Be Clear on Your Non-Negotiables

As you’re working out the budget, you may find that you need to move things around – that’s normal. However, you will want to know what your non-negotiables are. Ideally, you’ll be able to work out what you don’t want to compromise on and what you will need to work a bit harder on. There are always cheaper (or more expensive) alternatives for things, it’s all about making it work the best way you can.

5. Decide on Your Design Style

You may also want to think about the style you want to go with. It’s safe to say that you won’t want the house to feel like a jumble of styles and design. Instead, you want it to be cohesive and there to be a running theme through the property. So looking to get this sorted before work gets underway is a huge part of the process.

6. Have Fun with Key Features

You may also want to think about what main features and focal points you wish to bring in too. Now, if you are renovating over time, you may be working on this room-by-room. If you’re building, you’ll need to work this all out in the beginning. Bringing in a stunning panoramic fireplace to your open-plan living area can bring in both warmth and aesthetics, whereas a striking staircase can be both practical and beautiful. It’s all about finding statement design ideas that will work with your requirements here.

7. Focus on Practicalities

One of the most important things you can do throughout this entire process is to make sure that you’re focusing on the practicalities every step of the way. This can be extremely important when it comes to the layout of your home. You will want to make sure that you can facilitate the way you live via the way you’ve designed the home!

8. Be Creative with the Decor

However, it can also be easy to find yourself getting bogged down with the practicalities! So at the same time, you need to try and balance that with some creativity too. After all, this is going to be your home forever – so you absolutely want to make sure that the design and overall decor are exactly what you love. Don’t be afraid to have fun with it.

9. Keep a Long-Term Vision in Mind

Something that can be incredibly useful to keep in mind here is the idea of you being here for years! You will want to make sure that your home can facilitate all of the eras of your life! But at the same time, try not to lean too heavily into trends unless you don’t mind changing them in a few years to come.

10. Don’t Forget the Landscaping!

Finally, you’re also going to want to make sure that you’re taking on the landscaping! Here, you may find that your architect has this covered should you use one. If not, you may want to get some plans made up. It can be fun to really bring your design ideas to life. Your outside space will be a huge part of your living space – particularly when the weather is great. So you’ll want to make sure that you have this worked into the overall plan and budget too.

Final Thoughts: Making it All Manageable

When it comes to your forever home, you’ll always want it to look and feel the way that is right for you. But at the same time, you want this process to be as manageable as possible. The idea of building a home from scratch or carrying out a full renovation can be a lot – so it’s all about being able to make it as stress-free and enjoyable as you can. You might choose to hire a project manager or do it yourself – either way, make sure that you set realistic timescales. Also, be sure that you’re being realistic with your budget. The last thing you need is to be stressing out about costs and timeframes while you’re trying to make it all work.

Ultimately, as long as you can make sure to design everything the way you want it, you’ll find that it will be one of the best experiences you commit to in your life! Your dream home will certainly be worth it.
