The best sleep and relaxation tips

12 September 2021 Comments : 24

AD – this is a sponsored post.

It would be a bit of an understatement to say that 2020 has been an unusual year. With the constant uncertainty that everyone’s had to deal with this year, normal routines and daily life have fallen to the wayside.

A bed with white sheets

You’d be forgiven for getting into some bad sleeping habits over the past few months, as I don’t think living through a global pandemic is the most conducive to a good night’s rest!

Why getting enough sleep is important

Getting a healthy amount of sleep is just as important for health and wellbeing as eating a balanced diet and doing regular exercise. Insufficient sleep has been linked to weight gain, and good sleepers tend to have healthier appetites.

It’s no secret that plenty of sleep means that you’re more productive and have a higher level of concentration. Poor sleep can also weaken your immune system, leaving your body more vulnerable.

Mood is one of the most visible signs of a lack of sleep. We’ve all had those cranky days where we snap at someone just because we could do with a nap!

Ultimately, sleep gives your body and mind a chance to recover from the strain of the day. It is important to fully recuperate so you can face the next day with enthusiasm!

Combating sleepless nights

Whether you’re up all evening worrying about the next day, waking up throughout the night or just can’t seem to relax, there are so many things you can try to improve the quality of your sleep and help combat insomnia. From setting an evening routine to finding ways to make your room extra cosy and even using natural remedies such as hemp honey.

Routines

This is a simple one, but a steady routine can always be useful when trying to introduce structure and normality back into your life. Setting up daily routines has been the saving grace for many during the lockdown period, and nightly routines should be no different.

Maybe you start stepping away from technology earlier during the evening and start a routine of reading for 30 minutes before bed? Maybe you take up meditation? As long as you stick to a consistent routine with getting enough sleep in mind, you’ll start having more relaxing evenings that are conducive to quality sleep.

Apps

I know I just said to get away from technology before bed, but for most people, it’s the bright screens and blue light exposure that keeps them up!

Relaxing with a podcast or soothing sleep app can help you drift off before you know it. Apps like Calm or Headspace host stories and calming audio extracts that aim to get you feeling sleepy even on the most restless of nights.

Get cosy

Simply washing your bedding and pyjamas with a lavender scent can help give you a more relaxing evening. There is nothing better than sleeping in clean sheets!

Making your bedroom an overall relaxing, clutter-free space can also help create the ultimate environment for sleep. Lighting candles (as long as you don’t fall asleep with them still lit) and hanging fairy lights are some of the easiest ways to elevate your regular bedroom to a cosy space.

Using natural remedies

Luckily, Mother Nature also has some great things up her sleep when it comes to feeling sleepy and relaxed!

Chamomile tea

Milk is a classic before-bed drink, but chamomile tea also has some great relaxing properties. Chamomile is a natural remedy that has been used for years to help reduce inflammation, anxiety and insomnia. It’s definitely a good idea to stay away from drinks with caffeine in the evening, and chamomile can be a great alternative.

Lavender

This purple plant is a popular and long-standing relaxation agent. A lavender scent in candles, oils and sleep mists is often used to help improve sleep quality. Like chamomile, lavender is also used in bedtime teas to promote relaxation and peace. Plus, it smells lovely!

CBD oil

CBD and hemp oils have been scientifically proven to help with relaxation and sleep issues. CBD oil for sleep is not a miracle remedy, but it does have proven benefits. Contrary to popular belief, CBD oil does not get you high but is instead used as a natural sleeping agent that can help to regulate the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. The benefits include reduced (but not cured!) stress and anxiety, along with improved relaxation and sleep regulation.

Before your head hits the pillow, why not share your favourite sleep and relaxation tips in the comments below? Sweet dreams!

Sleep is so important to our good health. I recently read a book called The Ripple Effect and saw a talk by its author Dr Greg Wells. He speaks of the importance of sleep to our health. Consistent with your post, one of his suggestions was “protect the last hour” meaning no screen time, or stimulating activities in the hour before bed time. He suggests reading or meditation or even just taking a bath instead.

These are great tips, sleep is so so important! I can definitely advocate for chamomile tea. My trouble tends to be with staying asleep, have you any tips there? I’m definitely going to try these though!

I’m not a good sleeper at all. I always find just trying to focus on my breathing helps me to empty my mind and drift back off.

I have to wake up ridiculously early for work (anytime between 1am and 3am) and I find that I never manage to get to bed early enough the night before. I’m going to try and include some of these tips in a nighttime routine that will hopefully help me to unwind and get some good sleep☺️
