This is a guest post.
Eggnog, the festive drink that’s become super popular in America. A delicious thick and creamy egg based drink with festive spices that all the family can enjoy (if you don’t add alcohol). Today I’m sharing a wonderful homemade eggnog recipe that you’ll love.
Hello everyone! I’m Shyla and I’m grateful to be here writing a guest post for Lauren and her wonderful blog. The holidays are a time for traditions and family. In my family we love to make homemade eggnog as a lovely and sentimental treat.

After a few years of practice we have come up with what we believe to be the best homemade eggnog recipe for the holidays. I can’t wait to share it with you today!
A brief history of eggnog
Before we jump straight into this fantastic recipe, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the origin of eggnog. Eggnog actually dates far back into Medieval European times.
The history is a bit debated upon, but it is believed to be closely related to posset which was a hot milk drink made with eggs and figs. The drink was also believed to contain an ale-like distilled alcohol of some kind.
At some point this recipe came to America during the colonization and became the eggnog that we know today!
What you will need
- 6 Large Eggs
- ½ Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
- 2 Cups Milk
- ½ Teaspoon Of Pumpkin Pie Spice or Nutmeg
- ¼ Teaspoon Of Salt
- ¼ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Ground Cinnamon
How to make eggnog
Now that the history lesson is over, let’s jump into how this eggnog is made. There are many great recipes for eggnog out there in the vast web, but I’ve honestly never had eggnog as good as this. It is thick, creamy, and just the right amount of sweet!
This particular eggnog recipe does not call for alcohol. That doesn’t mean you can’t add alcohol for your own version of course. Rum, brandy and bourbon are all popular choices to include
Also if you fear salmonella poisoning when it comes to making eggnog you have nothing to fear with this recipe because you will be cooking the eggs to a safe 160 degrees Fahrenheit. (71 degrees Celsius).
Separate your egg yolks and put them into a bowl. Pour your granulated sugar in with the egg yolks and whisk them together. They should become smooth and creamy.
Next, pour your heavy whipping cream, milk, salt, and nutmeg/pumpkin pie spice into a sauce pan. On medium high heat allow the liquids to come to a low simmer. Be sure to stir frequently.

Slowly spoon out the hot liquid
Once your liquid has heated in the sauce pan you can begin spooning it out and pouring it over the egg and sugar mixture.
This will prep and temper the eggs. Be sure to stir the eggs and sugar each time you pour in a spoonful. Once you have about 3/4ths of the hot liquid in your bowl of eggs and sugar, pour it back into the sauce pan.
Stir the mixture together for about 5 minutes or until your liquid reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees Celsius).
Remove from heat & add vanilla extract
Once you’ve taken the pan from the heat you can then add the vanilla extract. Stir it in well and you will notice that your liquid has thickened quite a bit already.
Pour your liquid into a sturdy pitcher.

Chill for one hour
Place your pitcher of liquid gold into the fridge for about one hour to cool down. Some people prefer it nice and hot so this is optional to you.
The eggnog will get much thicker if you decide to chill it for a while.
Make your own whipped topping (optional)
Feel free to use simple store bought whipped cream on top of your homemade eggnog. I figure if I am going to take the time to make eggnog from scratch I can take an extra minute to make the whipped cream. Totally up to you!
All you need is 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 1 cup of heavy whipping cream. Pour them both into a chilled steel mixing bowl.
Use a hand mixer to blend them together for about 5 minutes to get fluffy whipped topping!
Serve!

Now pour a lovely glass of eggnog and top it off with a nice dollop of whipped cream with a pinch of ground cinnamon on top.
I hope you enjoyed this recipe and are able to make your own holiday eggnog tradition! Thank you so much Lauren for allowing me to share my best homemade eggnog recipe with you and your readers. It’s been a pleasure!

Have you ever made eggnog before? Will you be giving this recipe a try? Let me know in the comments.

I have never really fancied this as I did think it was a raw egg thing, but I am definitely going to give that a try this year x
I think that thought puts a lot of people off!

I’ve never tried eggnog! I literally can’t be contemplate what it tastes like. I don’t think the name is particularly pleasing but from the ingredients, it sounds pretty good! I might have to give it a go this year 🙂 x
I have to agree, the name doesn’t make it sound appetising at all!

Yay! I have never managed to get it quite right so will be good to try a completely new recipe. I have been working through the Latin American eggnogs, seems like each country has their own variation and name!
That’s amazing! I hope this recipe works for you!
I used to love eggnog! Unfortunately I won’t be having any this year but I will give this recipe to my brother in law. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I know you’ve given up drinking but this is an alcohol free recipe so maybe you could still enjoy a glass!
