Today I have a wonderful guests post from Rebekah who blogs over at rebekahcharles.com. Enjoy!
Life can get pretty stressful, daunting, overwhelming, and stagnant. Your energy levels have been dropping as the day passes by, and your surroundings are getting clustered and messy. You start to feel stuck, your brain starts to get foggy, you lack motivation, and your creativity is low. Guess what! It is time to detox your life to boost those energy levels again.

What does it mean to detox your life?
To start, by definition, detox is a process or period in which one abstains from or rids the body or mind of toxic or unhealthy practices. Detoxing your life is about energizing your life and recharging your batteries. “It’s about removing harmful materials just as much as replenishing with beneficial materials that support your overall health and well-being. It’s about looking within to gain greater awareness around your daily habits in an effort to make more conscious and informed decisions moving forward.”
What happens if you never detox?
Very often, when we feel as though we have eaten unhealthy over the weekend or during the week, we may say, “okay, I need a cleanse or detox.” You understand the importance of a healthy body, and you know the health dangers involved if you continue to keep on eating unhealthy. The same concept can translate over to your mental health.
It is essential to flush out toxins from your mind because your mental and emotional health needs a cleanse from time to time. If you do not take time out to flush those toxins out, the following can happen:
- You start having difficulty to cope with unpleasant emotions
- You may begin to show signs that a nervous breakdown is coming
- You will have trouble focusing
- Health issues can develop
- You may start having difficulty making decisions
- You become easily stressed, irritable, and fatigue
- You begin to feel overwhelmed
Time to detox your life!
What’s important is planning for your detox! Plan a day or two before and choose one or a few of these ideas to implement the next day. Make sure it is a smart thought out plan. Take your time to reel in what it is you want to detox on. Make a to-do list or set up your calendar for the week if you think that will help.
When you plan to start your detox, put yourself in a positive frame of mind so that your mood is optimistic and positive. You can do this by listening to a motivational piece or engaging in positive self-talk. This will help to set the tone.
Alright let’s dive right into it shall we?
Be intentional
Before you begin detoxifying your mental space, become intentional on what you are about to do and why you are about to do it. Take time to understand the benefits of detoxing your life from time to time. Being intentional will bring your body and mind into an awareness state that change is coming, and this change will be right for you. Make a plan and set a goal, go at your pace, and embrace the cleanse!
Free your mind from negative thoughts
Our minds can get the best of us when it comes to negative thoughts. Very often we are too hard on ourselves. We can be our worst critic, and because of this, we can become consumed with negative thoughts. There are so many external factors (social media, family, friends, workplace) that can easily influence how we think of ourselves. Don’t let this be the case for you.
If any negative thoughts pop up, notice it, and ask yourself if this thought is true. Most of the time it is not. How you think about yourself will reflect on how you view your life. If you are always considering the worst about yourself or a given situation, you are blocking your own blessing, and you will never grow emotionally and mentally. Ditch the negative thinking by engaging in daily positive affirmations.
On another note, if you notice that you’re surrounded by friends or loved ones who are constantly negative (always complaining, always have an attitude), you are putting your energy at risk. This is something that you cannot afford to do. Your thoughts will start to shift from positive to negative. Your energy is your most valuable asset, and you must protect it at all times. Surrounding yourself with positivity, not only helps your creativity, but it also helps to boost your overall attitude, boost your energy levels, and have you in a positive frame of mind.
Free yourself from toxic relationships
Now, this is easier said than done. Why? Because many of us are sometimes not able to tell if a relationship is good for us or not, or we are too stubborn to let go of these kinds of relationships. This can only hurt us in the end.
Sometimes it may be hard to cut people out of your life, especially if it is a friend or family member you’ve known for many years. You may feel guilty and just put up with the toxicity in the relationship. But this is not healthy, because, in the end, you are jeopardising your happiness.
If the relationship with your friends/partner brings negativity, sadness, shame, guilt, and anger, then why does the relationship still exist? Make yourself a priority. Surround yourself with people who are positive and genuinely care about your well-being. They bring you joy, happiness, success, and peace of mind.
Release those body toxins
Ahhhh! Did I hear someone say “Spa day”?
Detoxing our bodies is equally important as our mental health. Take the time out and be intentional about detoxing your whole body. Sometimes we can be so harsh to our body and not give it the loving affection it needs to thrive. You deserve to feel amazing in your own skin.
Try some of the following:
- Eat foods that detox the body.
- Plan a spa day at home or visit a spa location. Indulge in pampering yourself for the day or a few hours.
- Relax and meditate
- Take time and do your full skincare routine regimen.
- Get more sleep

Get up and move
Exercising or just moving your body is an excellent way to release tension and detox your body. There are so many great benefits to physical activity. It can help decrease/treat mild depression or anxiety, ease tension, and boost your mental energy. It also helps to reduce stress by releasing toxins and relaxing your muscles. It also helps to improve your concentration, mood, and motivation. Try some of these:
- Yoga
- Brisk Walking
- Running
- Aerobics
- Dancing
- Circuit Training
Digital detox
Sometimes we have to put that phone down, turn off the tv, log off the computer/tablet and take a moment to clear our minds and focus on other meaningful things in life. But let’s be real, it is easier said than done because technology sometimes can be our life-line, especially during this unprecedented time. It is so easy to become addicted to all these apps and platforms, but take time to schedule away time from social media and technology overall.
Social Media has its benefits, but every once in a while, it is good to detox for the sake of your mental health. Spending too much time engaging on social media can negatively impact your mental health in many ways. It can throw off your sleep cycle, make you feel insecure, create feelings of anxiety, make you addicted to instant gratification, or cause you to develop emotional scars. Make an intentional effort to at least detox from your phone once a week. Silence those notifications and do something fun! Your body, mind, and soul will thank you!
Give some of the following a try:
- Go for a walk without your phone or turn your phone off when you are on your walk.
- Spend time reading a new book a week
- Learn a new craft or skill
- Use the bathroom without the phone. I know we all take our phones to the bathroom!
De-clutter your environment
Our surroundings can have an impact on our energy levels. For some people, they can thrive in clutter because this is when they feel most creative. For others, however, too much clutter can inhibit one’s creativity.
Regardless of your preference, every once in a while, it is good to clear your environment. Spring clean, donate unwanted clothes, redecorate. All of these are good to help put you in a better mood and with less brain fog.
Make your home environment your haven. Create a soothing and relaxing home full of calming colours, textures, and styles that you love. Create an ambience that will help centre you and bring you peace. Listen to music, read a book, engage in a favourite hobby, and learn a new craft.
Why is it important to detox?
Life can really knock us down sometimes. There are many challenges, hurdles, hoops, and loops that we go through daily. Very often, we are always going a mile a minute, and the only time we notice that it is time for a pause on life is when our backs are against the wall. Having a consistent detox regimen is essential because it helps us recharge our batteries, and it helps us to keep balance in our lives and be intentional about our mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
This is the epitome of overall health.

I love this! I think a detox can seem like a pretty scary concept if you dont know how to go about it!
Yes definitely! I think Rebekah did a great job of breaking it all down!
This is a really great post! I needed to read this today. My current habits and routine is terrible and I feel constantly fatigued and unproductive. I need to get active and put less pressure on myself to maintain my social medias. I am definitely keen to try yoga and get involved in physical activity at uni – i think it’ll be a great change for me! Xxx
Definitely. You shouldn’t put pressure on yourself when it comes to social media, take a step back and a bit of time out. I hope it does you good!
Thanks so much. So happy you enjoyed my post and found it helpful🤗
This is so important! Completely agree with all of your points! I certainly find decluttering and cleaning a space before relaxing helps my mind! I like to light insense and relax with a green tea or water, a face mask, and gentle soothing music. I love all of your ideas and I think we should all take the time to detox once in a while, it’s so important for our mental health! Thanks for posting!
Great tips! It’s definitely something we should all do once in a while.
Elle you are so right! Detox may sound drastic, but just becoming consistent in doing these things will soon become a part of our routine, and the benefits of course will be valuable.
Some great tips here, thank you Rebekah! Could definitely do with intentionally implementing a few of these strategies myself so this post will be a great resource. 🙂
Yes me too!

That’s great! I’m glad you found it helpful to detox.
Emily,so happy to hear that you took that so needed detox! Doesn’t it feel great?
This is great! Sometimes the thought of a detox can be overwhelming, so I guess it is important to concentrate one one thing at a time. I have just started getting into manifestation /positive affirmations, and it is surprising how your mindset shifts!
Thanks for sharing!
Aimsy xoxo
I’ve just started looking into manifestation myself and you’re right, it is surprising!
Aimsy, positive affirmations may seem like it has no effects because you are just saying words. But really and truly the more you teat and believe, the powerful they become! Thanks so much
Beautiful post. I think this is so important and so under-rated. So many people don’t even think about mental health as an issue and so glad to see people write about such topics. Thanks for sharing!

Definitely! It’s so important to take a step back and pause sometimes.
Love this handy post! ! A mental, physical, and digital detox is a great way to move on in life feeling refreshed and with an idea of where you are heading next. Being intentional is a wonderful way to stay on track. 🙂
It’s really great, I think we all need to pause and detox once in a while.
Great advice! I can’t put into words how much comfort I find from decluttering my home. Too much ‘stuff’ adding up has a major impact on my mental and emotional well-being. We actually just got home from a long weekend camping, and I’m looking forward to the cleaning that will happen in the coming days. I can literally feel the energy changing in the home when I do!
It’s such a great feeling to have a really good declutter.
I recently detoxed my closet. Very freeing to get rid of stuff I don’t wear.
It’s such a great feeling isn’t it?!
Great tips!
Thanks.
A complete detox feels soooo good! It’s worth the “pause” to do it regularly
Yes definitely! We all need to pause sometimes.
