Today is the first day of the government scheme to get people back into restaurants. Eat Out To Help Out will run every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday throughout August. The best bit? You get a whopping 50% off your food bill (up to the value of £10) at participating restaurants!

You can check the full list of restaurants participating in the scheme here and you’ll be given a list of restaurants within a 5 mile radius of your postcode. It’s important to note that to qualify you must eat in, the scheme is not for takeout food. It also doesn’t cover alcoholic drinks but it does cover soft drinks.
Today though I’ve gone through and picked out some of my recommendations for participating restaurants in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
Estabula Bar and Grill
There are quite a few Estabula establishments in and around Yorkshire. The Barnsley one is located on Regent Street. If you’re looking for delicious cuts of meat at an all you can eat then this is your place! The meat is carved at your table and you can eat as little or as much as you want. Obviously things are slightly different under the current circumstances but you can still expect the same high quality, delicious meat.
Aroma Cafe Bar
Aroma Cafe Bar is located on the Victorian Arcade which is already a beautiful setting for a meal. Their menu is pretty extensive with a wide range of hearty dishes to choose from. Their afternoon teas are pretty delicious too!
The Mill of the Black Monks
The Mill of the Black Monks is a pub steeped in history. You’ll find it on Grange Lane, Barnsley. A former watermill built by the Cluniac Monks around 1150AD to service Monk Bretton Priory which sits opposite the mill. It’s worth a visit here just to look how beautiful the building is. It’s worth noting though that they are only participating in the scheme on a Wednesday as they are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
Old George Coffee House
For the best brownies you’ll ever have you need to head to Old George on Market Hill, Barnsley. They have a huge selection of brownies and they are to die for. It’s such a beautiful, independent coffee house too. Well worth a visit.
Jar Bar
Located in Market Kitchen in Barnsley town centre, Jar Bar offers cuisine from the Balkan Peninsula. I’m a huge, huge fan of Market Kitchen and all the wonderful establishments in there and in my opinion anyone of them is worth a visit. I wish more of them had signed up to this scheme though. If you’re looking for fresh food with an Eastern European twist then Jar Bar is where you need to go.
Grille Steakhouse/Chilli Restaurant
Grille and Chilli and located next door to each other with one being a steakhouse and the other an Indian restaurant. It used to be that if you were in one restaurant you could order from the other and I don’t believe this has changed as they are sister restaurants. You’ll find them on Market Street, Barnsley.
Burntwood
Burntwood Court Hotel has a really lovely bar (Burtwood Bar) that serves absolutely delicious food. The portions are huge and we’ve had lots of meals here and never been disappointed with anything we’ve had. You’ll find the Burntwood Hotel in Brierley on Common Road.
Rob Royd Farm Shop
Unfortunately I still haven’t made it to the Rob Royd Farm shop yet and I know I’m missing out on an absolute treat because my fiance used to work near here. He regularly visited on his lunch break and he would sing their praises every week. If you’re after big, hearty sandwiches, steaks or burgers then from my fiance’s glowing reviews, you won’t be disappointed. They will only be participating in the scheme on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You can find them on Genn Lane, Barnsley.
Dil Raj
We’re big fans on Indian food and Dil Raj serves amazing curries! I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve visited here over the years. Definitely worth a visit to grab your favourite curry dish. You’ll find them on High Street in Dodworth, Barnsley.
Saville Square
I used to live near Saville Square and for many years it was our go-to lunch spot. Their bacon and brie panini’s are out of this world and their homemade chips are delicious. I can’t recommend this place enough for a chilled out lunch spot. You’ll find them on Sheffield Road in Hoyland Common, Barnsley.
Khao Niew Thai Cafe
Another Market Kitchen establishment! This Thai cafe has been in Barnsley for a long time but moved into Market Kitchen when it opened last year. For traditional homemade Thai food you can’t go wrong with this place. You’ll find Market Kitchen in Barnsley town centre.
So there you go, if you’re in and around South Yorkshire these are my recommendations for places to visit during the Eat Out To Help Out Scheme. Just remember that many places require you to book in advance and remember that these days are likely to be very busy for the restaurants taking part so remember to be kind to the staff!
These are just my recommendations for the Barnsley area. If you have any other recommendations for South Yorkshire restaurants participating in the Eat Out To Help Out scheme then leave a comment.

Thank you! It’s been a really good idea to get people supporting restaurants again.
Sad not to be in Barnsley! I love the sounds of the Old George Coffee House because brownies are a love affair with me, and the Farm Shop sounds good too. I love that people are supporting their local restaurants and enjoying all that good food. 🙂
They are really good brownies!
That’s a good scheme! Both for the restaurants & for the customers… The pandemic has possibly hit the hospitality sector the hardest. In India, I’ve not yet begun to dine-in but have began to order food. I can’t wait to go to my favorite restaurant though!
It was a good scheme while it lasted!
