14 September 2019 Leave a Comment

Oxford is a beautiful city teeming with history and fantastic things to do. Surprisingly there’s a lot you can do for free as well. So whether you’re a long term couple looking for a perfect date day or a singleton seeking out a first date location, there’s lots to chose from! My 4 cheap autumn date ideas are perfect for both those living in and around Oxford or those looking for somewhere new to go on a date!

As autumn creeps in and Christmas starts quickly coming around, spending money on dating might not be at the top of your list of things to do but I think autumn and Christmas are the perfect times for dating, I may be a little biased seen as I was a December dater but autumn and Christmas still remain my favourite times to go on a date with my fiance 12 years on! There’s nothing better than getting cosy as the nights get darker and there’s some fantastic things you can do at this time of year that won’t cost a penny.

Oxford Christmas Market

Is there any better Oxfordshire Dating idea than the Christmas market? I think not! The market runs from the 5th December to the 21st December and in my opinion is the best, cosy and free date idea ever. The market can be found on the historic Broad Street which provides the perfect backdrop for the cute wooden chalets. O.K there might me a little expensive involved in the form of a mulled wine but for the ultimate romantic Christmas date you can’t go wrong with a Christmas market!

Oxford’s Christmas Light Festival

This year will be the 10th year of the Christmas Light Festival. It runs over a full three day weekend and the whole of Oxford’s city centre is illuminated with art installations. This years theme is ‘Discovery’ and will celebrate scientific discovery and the 50th anniversary of the moon landings. Art installations will be scattered through out the streets and buildings of the city with the promise of some of the most iconic buildings opening up for free festive evens. Musicians, dancers and choirs will be at pop-up locations throughout the city and the festival is opened with a lantern parade winding through the city. The event runs from Friday 15th November to Sunday 17th November and everything is free. This sounds like the perfect event for any Oxfordshire Singles to try something a little bit different for a first date, the lights, lanterns and Christmas spirit couldn’t create a more perfect romantic atmosphere.

Visit the university grounds

Many of the universities actually charge you to look around the grounds but there are two free options if exploring some history and architecture sounds like a fun date idea. Your first option is Christ Church Meadow which is part of Christ Church college, although you have to pay to walk around the college grounds the meadow is completely free and in my opinion the better option anyway. The meadow is home to a variety of wildlife and you can also access the river from here which would make for a beautiful walk on a cool, crisp day. Your other free college grounds option is Worcester College which is one of the only Oxford colleges that doesn’t charge. With extensive grounds and plenty of impressive architecture this would be the perfect location for a slower paced date where you can take the time to just enjoy being with each other especially as Worcester college isn’t as popular with tourists either!
So they are my Oxfordshire autumn date ideas you need to try out and the best thing is they won’t cost you a single penny.
