The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

11 June 2019 Leave a Comment

Alicia Berenson writes a diary as a release, an outlet – and to prove to her beloved husband that everything is fine. She can’t bear the thought of worrying Gabriel, or causing him pain.

Until, late one evening, Alicia shoots Gabriel five times and then never speaks another word.

Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber is convinced he can successfully treat Alicia, where all others have failed. Obsessed with investigating her crime, his discoveries suggest Alicia’s silence goes far deeper than he first thought.

And if she speaks, would he want to hear the truth?

I love a good twisty thriller and The Silent Patient did not disappoint. The book opens with Alicia Berenson’s diary and as the story unfolds we’re constantly trying to work out why Alicia shot her husband and why she’s remained silent ever since. Alicia is now in a secure mental health facility and no one has been able to get through to her until a new psychotherapist, Theo Faber joins the facility and makes it his mission to get Alicia to speak. Slowly by returning to her love of art and finally digging out her diary, Alicia reveals what went on the night she shot her husband five times.
I loved trying to work out what was going on with the different characters in this book and it was great that I didn’t see the twist coming making it a genuine surprise. Although there a quite a lot of developed characters in the book it never felt like there were too many or that I couldn’t keep up with the story, it just added to the suspense and mystery as I changed my mind about 3 or 4 times over who I didn’t like and who I thought was being suspicious!
This would be a great summer/holiday read if you’re looking for something that’s easy to get into and quick to read.
