I’ve been blogging for 8 years now and I’m by no means an expert, I only blog as a hobby (yes people like us do still exist, not everyone blogs as a job!) and there’s a lot I’d still love to know more about but I’ve also learnt a lot of blogging tips over these past 8 years. When I started blogging the industry, or rather lack of it at that time, looked completely different to what it does now. That been said there’s some pretty big things I wish I’d known about all those years ago that could’ve changed the path of my blog. Here are 5 things I wish I’d known when I started blogging.
To buy my own domain straight away
It took me 6 years to purchase my own domain that was 6 years that I essentially wasted in building up a DA score. DA scores only count on blogs with their own domain so if you’re still using the WordPress or Blogger free domain then DA isn’t tracked. Not only does having your own domain look better but I could’ve had a higher DA score by now.
What the hell domain authority is
So this is definitely a more recent discovery for me. I only really learnt about DA scores around a year ago and the things that can improve your score or have a negative impact on it. Again if this is something I’d known about earlier, my score would probably be higher now. I’ve missed out on years of improving my DA score and as such I’m having to figure it all out now. And slowly. When you’ve been blogging for 8 years it’s a long slog to go back through posts.
The power of SEO
I’ll hold my hands up and say I’m terrible at SEO and in all honesty I still don’t really understand it. I wish I’d invested some time in learning about SEO way back in the beginning because I struggle to find the time now. If I’d have learnt more about it, it might come more naturally to me know. SEO also plays a big role in your DA score so it really is something I kind of regret not learning about.
To recognise my niche
I’m a lifestyle blogger which means I have pretty wide spectrum of topics I can blog about and I do blog about a lot of different things still to this day because that’s what I enjoy but it took me a long time to realise what topics I was truly passionate writing about. This isn’t something I could’ve known when I started blogging as it’s something that’s come with growing up, having different life experiences and finding what I’m happy with creatively. I definitely shouldn’t have tried fitting into every niche though so if I could go back I’d tell myself to keep well clear of beauty and fashion blogging because that’s just not me!
