How to have the perfect indoor-outdoor space

Indoor-outdoor spaces, as they are more often called, are becoming more common in houses around the country. It’s not hard to understand why the concept is gaining traction right now. A growing number of people are looking for ways to spend more time outside, but they want that time outside to be comfortable – this is the epitome of the indoor-outdoor space.

In addition, they want a seamless transition between the inside and outside. As though you were entering a new “room” in your home, but with a more fresh atmosphere.

As a result, connecting the inside and outside of a property can be difficult. However, it is possible. A thorough understanding of the proper strategy is what’s required to ensure that the look is a successful one. Otherwise, in the end, you’ll spend a lot of money on something that doesn’t look as good as you had thought it would.

The good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot to create the ideal indoor-outdoor area. However, before you begin, you must plan out your strategy. Otherwise, the two portions of the space would never be able to effectively integrate into one whole. Here are the steps to take.

Make your outside space a real room

Outdoor spaces should be more than just places to be outside. For them to be interesting and make you want to spend more time in them, they also need other things. Because of this, a lot of people are turning their outdoor areas into rooms in their own right.

Don’t worry if you’re using the same setup in more than one room. That’s fine, as long as each room serves a purpose. Think about the last time you spent a long time outside. Most of the time, it was because you were doing a very specific thing. If you have a room there, you can be there more often; you can be there every day.

Try to turn your outdoor space into a second dining room, kitchen, or living room if you can. If you like to take naps in hammocks or loungers, you could even turn it into a bedroom. That might be going a little too far, but it could be ideal for guests, for example. The choice is ultimately yours. If you install bifold doors, you can open things up or section them off as much as you like. Just remember to always choose quality; bifold doors have multiple interlocking parts so a material that doesn’t expand or contract (dimensionally stable) is vital.

Keep the same flooring

If you don’t want the indoor and outdoor areas to clash, the most important thing to do is keep the same flooring. Even though this might sound hard to do, there are now a lot of brands making options for homeowners that are very appealing. Some companies, for example, make tiles that look the same but can be used both indoors and outdoors. So you can get something that works both inside and outside without changing the way it looks. You can also just put down outdoor paving slabs inside, but if you’re not used to it, it might feel a little rough.

Keep the materials consistent

Another important part of building an indoor-outdoor space is to use the same materials throughout, not just when it comes to the flooring. You want them to fit together well so that the whole thing looks like it has a common theme.

How you do this depends a lot on your space’s style and shape. But there are some things that you should keep the same. For example, if your doors are black plastic, you could put black plastic privacy shades on top of your black brick walls. As we’ve already said, you can also take the flooring outside. Or, you can make your interiors more industrial, which will let you use more of the same materials inside as on the outside of your home.

Add a pergola

Pergolas are a must-have for every outdoor area. Why? Because it shields you from the sun and encourages you to spend time outside. During the sweltering summer months, vertical lattices extending across the top provide you with some protection from the sun’s rays.

As an aesthetic feature in their own right, pergolas are also a great way to add elevation to your outdoor spaces. It might be a bit unusual to leave your interiors (which have ceilings) and enter the outside world if you don’t do this. Your exteriors typically require a little roofing to make them match in with the rest of your home’s design concept, so why not install a pergola, and the job is already done?
