As the leaves change colour and the air turns crisp, autumn offers a perfect opportunity to revamp your budget and find creative ways to save money. With Christmas approaching, it’s a great time to adopt new habits that will leave your purse a little fuller. In this post, we’ll explore five easy and effective autumn money saving tips for keeping your expenses in check during the colder months.

Use Your Slow Cooker to Batch Cook
One of the simplest and most efficient ways to save both time and money this autumn is by making the most of your slow cooker. As the days grow shorter and schedules become busier, having a hearty, home-cooked meal ready at the end of the day can be a game-changer. Not only does a slow cooker allow you to create delicious and comforting meals, but it also helps you save money by buying ingredients in bulk and utilising budget-friendly cuts of meat.
Imagine coming home to the delightful aroma of a perfectly simmered stew or a flavourful chilli. By preparing larger batches, you can portion out leftovers for multiple meals, eliminating the need for takeaways or expensive restaurant visits. This approach not only trims your food expenses but also reduces your overall energy consumption, as slow cookers are known for their energy efficiency. Making delicious food in larger batches is definitely one of the most easy ways to save money this autumn.
Ways To Get cosy Without Using Central Heating
As the temperatures drop, it’s tempting to crank up the central heating to stay warm and comfortable. However, this can quickly lead to inflated utility bills. Fortunately, there are plenty of cosy alternatives that won’t break the bank.
a. Layer Up: Embrace autumn fashion by wearing your favourite jumpers, scarves, and cosy socks. Layering up with clothing can help you stay warm without relying solely on heating systems. Blankets are also super handy for another comforting and cosy layer.
b. Warm Beverages: Treat yourself to hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. Not only will these warm drinks keep you toasty, but they also create a sense of comfort and relaxation.
c. Use Draught Stoppers: Prevent cold draughts from seeping into your home by using draught stoppers at the base of doors and windows. This simple trick can make a significant difference in maintaining a cosy atmosphere.
d. Optimize Sunlight: During the daytime, keep your curtains open to let in natural sunlight. Sunlight can help warm up your living spaces without the need for heating systems.
By embracing these cosy alternatives, you can significantly reduce your reliance on central heating and cut down on energy costs while still enjoying a warm and inviting home. Creating that cosy atmosphere in your home without the need for expensive energy bills is one of my favourite autumn money saving tips.
Prepare Your Home for the Colder Months
As autumn transitions into winter, taking proactive steps to prepare your home can lead to substantial savings on your energy bills and it can actually be one of the easy ways to save money this autumn. Here are some simple yet effective ways to get your home ready for the colder months:
a. Seal Draughts and Leaks: Inspect your windows and doors for any gaps or cracks that could let cold air in. Sealing these drafts with weather-stripping or caulking can help maintain a warmer interior and reduce the need for excessive heating.
b. Tune Up Your Heating System: Schedule a professional maintenance check for your heating system. A well-maintained system operates more efficiently, which can lead to cost savings in the long run. You should be getting your boiler serviced every year to make sure it’s running effectively.
c. Adjust Thermostat Settings: Lower your thermostat a few degrees during the daytime when you’re active and add an extra layer of clothing to stay comfortable. At night, consider lowering the thermostat further and using extra blankets for a cosy sleep.
d. Insulate Your Home: Adequate insulation in your walls, attic, and floors can make a significant difference in retaining heat. Consider adding insulation where needed to prevent heat loss.
Earn Money From Survey Websites
In the digital age, there are various ways to make extra money from the comfort of your home, and participating in online surveys is one of them. While you won’t become a millionaire overnight, spending a little time each day on reputable survey websites can provide a steady stream of supplementary income. They’re great for earning a little extra cash in the run up to Christmas and seen as you’ll probably be inside more during autumn, they’re a great way to use your time wisely. Here’s how to get started:
a. Research and Choose Legitimate Sites: Look for well-established survey websites that have a track record of paying users for their opinions. Reading reviews and checking for payment proofs can help you avoid potential scams.
b. Set Aside Dedicated Time: Designate specific time slots in your day to complete surveys. Consistency is key to accumulating earnings over time.
c. Be Honest and Thoughtful: Survey websites value genuine feedback. Take your time to provide thoughtful and accurate responses, as this can lead to higher-paying opportunities.
d. Cash Out Wisely: Most survey sites offer multiple redemption options, including cash, gift cards, or other rewards. Choose the option that best suits your financial goals.
While you won’t get rich from survey websites, the extra earnings can add up and contribute to your autumn money-saving goals.
Have a Spending Freeze
Embracing a spending freeze is an effective way to reset your finances and focus on your autumn money-saving objectives. Doing a spending freeze is ideal in early autumn just before Christmas spending starts. During a spending freeze, you commit to not making any non-essential purchases for a designated period. Here’s how to implement a successful spending freeze:
a. Define Your Goals: Determine the duration of your spending freeze and set clear goals for what you hope to achieve. Whether it’s building an emergency fund, paying off debt, or saving for a specific purchase, having a purpose will keep you motivated.
b. Create a No-Spend List: Identify essential expenses that you can’t avoid, such as bills and groceries. Everything else goes on your no-spend list. This includes dining out, entertainment, and impulse purchases. This is also a great time to attempt Stoptober if you’re a smoker or Sober October if you want a break from alcohol. Not only will you be making a healthier lifestyle choice, you’ll be saving money too.
c. Find Free Activities: Explore free or low-cost activities to enjoy during your spending freeze. Take advantage of local parks, community events, and free cultural attractions.
d. Track Your Progress: Keep a record of your spending freeze journey. Track your savings and celebrate milestones along the way. Actually seeing the amount you’re saving is a great motivator to carry on.
e. Reflect and Adjust: At the end of your spending freeze, reflect on your achievements and areas where you could improve. Use this experience to make more mindful spending decisions in the future.
A spending freeze not only helps you save money but also encourages you to reassess your spending habits and prioritise what truly matters.
There’s no better time to embrace frugality and adopt money-saving strategies that will leave a positive impact on your finances. From harnessing the power of your slow cooker to preparing your home for the colder months, these easy and practical tips can help you navigate the season while keeping your budget on track. By making a few conscious choices and embracing a spending freeze, you can enjoy the beauty of autumn without compromising your financial well-being.
Remember, saving money isn’t just about cutting back – it’s about making intentional choices that align with your goals. So, as you sip on a warm beverage and cosy up in your layered knitwear, take a moment to appreciate the simple joys of autumn and the financial freedom that comes with smart money management.

Hi Laureny,
Nice post, the best way to save money is to make more money.😁
Freelance writing is also one way of making little extra cash, if you have the time.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your tips. You’re right making more money definitely means saving more money!
I so agree that we spend more around this time of the year. For us in the Philippines, it’s mainly because of Christmas. So before the lockdown, I started to challenge myself to a no-expense-day, at least one day a week. Now while sheltering in place, I’ve been continuing this challenge. Also, I agree with the surveys – it’s not an easy get rich scheme but when I qualify for a survey, I make time to answer. Eventually, I get enough to cash it out. Extra cash is always a welcome.
Extra cash is definitely always welcome! I love the idea of a no expense day it sounds like a great way to save some money!
Excellent tips!
Thanks!
I definitely agree with taking surveys! It’s nice having a little bit of extra cash.
I’ve been pretty good at buying only what I need, but since it was my bday this month, I went all out, but now I should do spending freeze again.
Sometimes you have to just treat yourself, especially on your birthday!
We’ve got out slow cooker out RIGHT NOW and aim to use it quite a bit this Autumn. We’re planning on doing a pumpkin soup this weekend too which can be refrigerated. That’s a great tip to help save money this Autumn (and also eat a lot of healthier, heartier meals too!) xxx
Pumpkin soup sounds delicious!
Great tips! I love batch cooking, although I don’t own a slow cooker but I’m thinking about getting a rice cooker :- D
I can’t recommend getting a slow cooker enough!
Great ideas! My bf is very hot-natured so we usually go several weeks into winter before turning the heat on and I am pretty layered up haha cozy sweatshirts and soft blankets are my best friends!I like the money saving tips of checking windows and radiators too
I love a good cosy blanket even when the heating is on!
I am a huge fan of soup and stew season! We always make a big pot each time, freezing our leftovers. That way, we can enjoy them later when the winter weather hits and the last thing I want to do is worry about cooking! Especially when we get busy during the holidays trying to buy/wrap gifts, attend holiday gatherings (okay, maybe less so this year), etc.
Batch cooking is great for busy times!
