How to Get Into Hiking

29 June 2026 Leave a Comment

Hiking has become one of the UK’s most popular outdoor activities, offering a combination of exercise, relaxation and adventure that appeals to people of all ages. With access to coastlines, national parks, forests and mountains across the country, there are countless opportunities for beginners to start exploring the outdoors at their own pace.

One of the biggest misconceptions about hiking is that it requires advanced fitness levels or expensive specialist equipment. In reality, getting started is often about building confidence gradually, choosing suitable routes and learning how to prepare properly for changing conditions.

Start with manageable routes

Many new hikers make the mistake of attempting difficult routes too early. While mountain climbs and long-distance trails can be appealing, beginning with shorter and more accessible walks helps build stamina and confidence more comfortably.

The UK has beginner-friendly routes, including countryside trails, woodland walks and lower-level lake or coastal paths. Starting with well-marked routes also makes navigation less stressful for those still learning basic hiking skills.

As experience grows, walkers can gradually increase distance and difficulty while becoming more comfortable with uneven terrain and changing weather conditions.

Invest in the right footwear & clothes

Proper footwear is one of the most important investments any new hiker can make. Even relatively easy trails can become uncomfortable or dangerous without suitable shoes or boots. Water-resistant hiking boots with good grip help provide stability on muddy, rocky or uneven ground. Comfortable socks and properly fitted footwear also reduce the risk of blisters during longer walks.

While specialist outdoor clothing can be useful, beginners do not necessarily need expensive gear immediately. Prioritising practical layers and weather protection is often more important than investing heavily straight away.

Prepare for changing weather

UK weather can change quickly, particularly in upland or rural areas. Conditions that begin with sunshine can shift to rain, wind or low visibility within a short period of time.

Checking forecasts before setting out is essential, but hikers should still prepare for unexpected changes by carrying waterproof layers, water, snacks and fully charged phones. Even on shorter walks, basic preparation can make a significant difference to both comfort and safety. For more remote routes, carrying maps or downloading offline navigation can also help prevent problems caused by losing signal coverage.

Explore some of the UK’s best hiking locations

One of the greatest advantages of hiking in the UK is the variety of landscapes available. From rolling hills to dramatic mountain scenery, there are routes suitable for every level of experience.

The Lake District remains one of the country’s most popular hiking destinations, particularly for beginners looking to experience scenic walking routes alongside welcoming towns and villages. Some of the great accommodation in Keswick is considered an ideal base for new hikers because it provides access to a wide range of trails, from gentle lakeside walks to more challenging fell routes.

Other beginner-friendly hiking locations across the UK include the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and parts of Snowdonia, as well as the Dorset and Cornish coastline, all of which offer routes suitable for different ability levels.

Hike at your own pace

One of the most important things for new hikers to remember is that hiking is not a competition. Pace, distance and difficulty should always be adjusted to individual comfort and fitness levels.

Taking regular breaks, enjoying the scenery and focusing on the experience itself often makes hiking more rewarding than rushing through routes simply to reach a destination. Walking with friends or joining beginner hiking groups can also help build confidence while making the experience more social.

Building a long-term hobby

Hiking is one of the most accessible ways to spend more time outdoors while improving both physical and mental wellbeing. With the right preparation and realistic expectations, beginners can gradually develop skills, confidence and enjoyment over time.

By starting with suitable routes and exploring welcoming locations such as Keswick and beyond, new hikers can discover just how rewarding outdoor walking can be throughout the UK.
