How to survive the lockdown as a couple

13 April 2020 Comments : 10

AD – This is a paid advertorial but all thoughts are my own
As the U.K. enters its fourth week of lockdown many couples are now in a position that they haven’t ever been in, spending 24/7 together. While you may have enjoyed having extra time together at the start of the Coronavirus lockdown, no matter how much you love each other spending every hour of every day in the same space can get tough. So how can you survive the lockdown together and still maintain a happy relationship?
How to survive the lockdown as a coupleMy fiance and I have been together for 12 years and while he’s worked at home for the past year, I haven’t. Luckily I’m on a rota at work which means I do two weeks working from home and one week in work which does provide a little more balance for us but I know many couples are now together all the time. It’s a tough one for me because while I’d rather be at home where I know I’m not putting either of us at risk, the week in work is stopping us from driving each other crazy! I’m guessing this is a situation we’re all going to be stuck on for a bit longer so we may as well learn how to get on with it!
Now if you’re single at this time or you’re having to be away from your partner because you haven’t been able to isolate together you might be getting the feeling that those fortunate enough to be with our partners are moaning a little but that’s not the case! I’ve already wrote about how to virtually date during this lockdown which provided some great ideas on how to maintain a fun and healthy relationship if you’re apart during this time. If you haven’t read the post yet I recommend checking it out to get some virtual date night ideas. However if you’re single during the lockdown, fear not because the post has you covered too and there’s some tips on there for how to get chatting to fellow singletons and make the lockdown a little less lonely. You’re probably best off staying local as when the lockdown is eventually lifted you’ll be able to meet any potential matches easily so stick to location specific dating sites such as Northampton dating or for something a little more casual there’s always sites like Northamptonshire sex! Or other locations such as a Cornwall dating site or Cornwall sex.
However if you’re like me and you’re finding yourself spending a lot more time with your partner than usual, here are some ideas for making sure you get through the lockdown together!

Spend time apart

I know this one may seem difficult as you’re stuck together in the same home and you can’t exactly go out anywhere but there are actually a few things you can do to make sure you’re spending a little bit of time apart such as working in different rooms or doing different activities at home. As my fiance was already working from home before this he has his own little office space that he’s still using while I’ve decided to set up my working space in the kitchen at the breakfast bar. That means for our normal working hours we’re apart and don’t actually see that much of each other.
While we both love a good movie night we’ve also being making sure we stick to doing the separate activities we both enjoy. If the weather is nice I love nothing more than spending all day in the garden reading while my other half gets easily bored doing that so he’s been on the PlayStation or editing things for our YouTube channel. It’s important to still make time to do things separately rather than spending every minute with each other. Work in separate spaces and enjoy you’re separate hobbies in different rooms too.
Even though we’re on lockdown you are still allowed one hour of daily outdoor exercise too, while this is a nice activity to do together, if you’re struggling to have some alone time this is the perfect opportunity to do your own thing too.

Have date nights

While spending time apart when you’re stuck in the same house is important it’s also good to make some time for each other too and I don’t just mean your average night watching TV together. Make the effort to do something different.
Movie night – While I’m sure we’re all making full use of the many streaming services available right now, make movie night something a bit special. Maybe pick out a movie that has a special meaning to you both or a show that brings back happy memories. My fiance and I are huge Disney fans so we’ve being making full use of the many great shows on Disney+ which has sparked a lot of conversations about our past Disney World trips and Disney trips we have planned for the future. It’s been nice reminiscing about special memories and making future plans.
Games night – If you’re anything like us we usually only ever play games over Christmas so why not dust of those games and have a games night. You can grab a few drinks and snacks and get competitive! Just don’t fall out when one of you doesn’t win!
Pub quiz – There are so many virtual pub quizzes happening right now so why not take part in one?! We love a good pub quiz so we actually plan on joining one on Friday.  We’re going to get a few drinks in and some crisps and turn our living room into the local pub.
Cook/bake together – Why not create a special meal together or choose something to make each other? One of you might have really being craving something sweet whilst the other might be really wanting a big bowl of mac and cheese. So why not take this time to make something yummy for each other? Or raid the cupboards and see what weird and wonderful recipes you could come up with together!
The key to surviving the lockdown as a couple is finding a healthy balance of spending time apart and having fun together. Finding this balance will stop you feeling like you’re just stuck together.
How are you surviving the lockdown? Are you like me and you’ve found yourself at home with your partner? Let me know in the comments what you’re doing to get through the lockdown together.

I think it’s definitely important not to live in each others pockets sometimes as having time to do your own things makes you appreciate time with them more!

Yes definitely. It can be difficult when you’re stuck in the same house together but it is possible to still do separate things!

My boyfriend and I are not living together and we’re 14km apart. I’ve only seen him once last May. It’s a difficult situation, but understandable. We also do video calls as our “date night” haha. That’s the best we could do at the moment. Keep safe!

That must be tough. Video call date nights sound lovely though.
