Whenever I think of autumn, snug blankets, a good book, and endless cups of hot chocolate come to mind.

With a chill in the air, autumn is the perfect time to create a mini bucket list of cosy things to do. Whether you love lighting candles and breathing in the scent of gingerbread and pumpkin, or making memories away from home, these things to do on a rainy day in autumn will keep you warm and cosy.
Head to your local independent coffee spot
There’s something magical about stepping into your favourite local independent coffee shop on a cold, rainy autumn day. I mean, what’s not to love about being greeted by the delicious scent of freshly brewed coffee and mouth watering cakes.
Whether you prefer a seasonal pumpkin spice latte or a classic cappuccino, your local coffee shop offers more than just beverages; it’s a cosy retreat from the rain where you can curl up in a comfortable corner for an hour or two and watch the world go by. And, getting to support a small local business is an extra bonus!
Decorate your home
There’s no better time to decorate your living space than on a rainy day in autumn. Embrace the changing season by bringing some warmth indoors. I love adding soft, textured throws to a room and placing some mini pumpkins and flickering candles to bring in a touch of the season.
Make an autumn wreath
Following on from above, a DIY project consisting of making your own autumn wreath is the perfect rainy day activity. All you need are some colourful leaves, pinecones, acorns, and twigs.
You can use a simple wreath base as your canvas, then arrange and secure leaves and twigs with twine or wire. Hang your finished creation on your front door to celebrate the colder months.
Curl up with a good book
Curling up with a good book is one of the best ways to spend a rainy day, particularly in autumn. If you’re like me, you’ll love wrapping yourself in a cosy blanket and letting the pages of your book transport you to another world.
Take a scenic drive
Embrace the beauty of rainy autumn days by taking a scenic drive. Sometimes, you just need to get out of the house, so this is a great way to get a little fresh air without getting soaked.
You could choose a scenic route through tree-lined roads and quaint villages or you could simply pass by your favourite local landscapes. Turn on the radio and enjoy the journey!
Bake delicious cookies
Who doesn’t love baking some tasty treats on a cold rainy day? Chocolate chip cookies are a classic recipe to recreate in the colder months. But, if you’re not a fan of the chocolate chip flavour, you could try making gingerbread or pumpkin cookies instead.
The sound of raindrops outside adds a soothing backdrop as you whip up some treats in the kitchen and fill your space with warmth.
Make your own pumpkin spice latte
You don’t need to leave your home to enjoy a pumpkin spice latte – why not make your own creation?
Start by brewing a strong cup of your preferred coffee, then combine it with a blend of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Add some warm milk and top your drink with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon for that extra touch of indulgence!
Watch an autumn inspired movie
Grab a seat on your sofa, cover yourself with a soft blanket, and spend a few hours immersed in an autumn inspired movie.
Some of the best autumn films that bring the magic of the season right into your living room include You’ve Got Mail and Hocus Pocus – two classics that everyone should watch!
Get crafty
A fun craft project makes a rainy afternoon fly by. From knitting a scarf or hand-painting a ceramic mug to creating your own autumn wall art, there are loads of things you can do while rain pours down outside.
A few other suggestions you could try include hand-lettering, macramé, making clay jewellery, and sewing projects.
Burn your favourite candles
You can’t create a cosy ambiance without lighting your most-loved candles. For autumn, warm, earthy fragrances like vanilla, cinnamon, or spiced apple are the best to complement the vibe of the season.
The soft glow of candlelight is especially inviting on a rainy day, even if you’re home alone. Burn one or two larger candles and sprinkle a couple of tea lights around to bring a layer of warmth into your home.
Host a games night
When raindrops provide the soundtrack to your evening, gather your friends or family for a cosy yet entertaining games night. Set up a board game like Scrabble or Monopoly, or try your hand at card or video games.
A game night gives you the chance to connect with others, while making memorable moments. Plus, the patter of rain creates an inviting atmosphere that’s ideal for a bit of friendly competition.
Start a journal
The serene sound of raindrops in autumn can bring a reflective mood, which makes starting a gratitude journal a good activity to begin. Since I’ve started journaling, I’ve felt more connected to myself and others.
An easy way to start is to document 5 things you’re grateful for. It could be something simple like expressing gratitude for the taste of your breakfast, or you may want to write down your thanks for a cosy roof over your head – whatever you can think of that you feel thankful for.
Whatever you decide to do on a rainy day in autumn, remember you can attempt several different things from this list, or use one as inspiration to prevent boredom in your downtime. Let me know if you have any other ideas in the comments!
