Cluster B Personalities: What Are They?

26 October 2023 Leave a Comment

Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by dramatic, emotional, or erratic thinking or behaviour. This cluster includes antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders. In general, cluster B disorders share some common characteristics such as dramatic behaviour, rapidly shifting moods, and impulsive or reckless decision-making.

Sufferers often have trouble forming stable, healthy relationships. However, the specific symptoms and presentation can vary widely between the different personality disorders in this cluster. Treatment typically involves psychotherapy to help manage emotions, behaviour, and interpersonal functioning. Medication may also be used to stabilize mood in some cases. Early intervention leads to better outcomes.

Antisocial Personality Disorder

Sociopaths exist today. They often engage in manipulative behaviour, lack inhibition, and disregard social norms or laws. Many sociopaths are able to hide their condition and blend into society, holding down jobs or relationships while secretly engaging in harmful behaviours.

Treatment options are limited as sociopaths rarely seek help and can be resistant to therapy. Some therapies focus on behaviour modification and helping the individual build empathy. However, true recovery is difficult and relapse common.

Sociopaths make up a small portion of the population, approximately one to four percent, but their behaviours can cause harm to those around them. Increased awareness and research into effective interventions may help mitigate the damage caused by this challenging disorder.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Individuals with borderline personality disorder can’t regulate their thoughts, emotions, or behaviour. Trauma, neglect, or invalidating environments in childhood may contribute to BPD development. The disorder occurs in around 1.6% of adults and is more prevalent in women. Symptoms tend to improve with age for many individuals.

Treatment often involves psychotherapy like dialectical behaviour therapy, which helps people better regulate emotions and improve relationships. Medications may help manage certain symptoms but are not a standalone treatment.

With professional help, many people with BPD can improve their coping abilities and experience greater stability over time. Early diagnosis and access to evidence-based treatment provide the best opportunity for the management of this challenging yet treatable disorder.

Histrionic Personality Disorder

Individuals with histrionic personality disorder must be the centre of attention. They may be inappropriately sexually provocative or seductive and are prone to rapidly shifting emotions. They often use their physical appearance to draw attention and can be vain or self-centred.

These men and women may speak dramatically with strong opinions but lack detail. They are easily influenced by others and can be suggestible. Their relationships tend to be shallow, and they may see people as things to be used.

They crave novelty, stimulation, and excitement and can act impulsively or recklessly as a result. Treatment focuses on psychotherapy to help them gain insight into their motivations and behaviour, learn coping skills, and build deeper relationships. Medications may help with accompanying anxiety or depression.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Men and women with narcissistic personality disorder think they are better than others, so they deserve special treatment. They exaggerate their talents and expect constant praise and admiration. Narcissists tend to exploit personal relationships for personal gain. They often react negatively to criticism with rage, shame, or humiliation.

The four Cluster B personality disorders share common characteristics of dramatic behaviour, unstable emotions, and tumultuous relationships. However, each disorder has its own distinct symptoms that can significantly impair a person’s life. Those with Cluster B disorders often have difficulty maintaining jobs and relationships. Professional treatment including therapy and medication can help manage symptoms.
