A Guide to Renovating Your Home Interior for a Modern Makeover

22 September 2023 Leave a Comment

Perhaps you have been living in your current property for a long time and have finally decided that you have both the time and the money (not to mention the inclination and work ethic) to entirely rework your home design to bring it up to date. Alternatively, maybe you have only just recently moved into your house and as much as you love the area, the garden, and the size of the rooms, the antiquated interior leaves a lot to be desired.

Regardless of your motivation, you have come to the right place, as here’s a simple yet informative guide to renovating your home interior for a modern makeover.

Declutter (Everywhere)

First and foremost, even though it would be too generic to state that the clearer the floor of the room, the more modern the aesthetic, it’s most certainly accurate that decluttering can make a huge difference to how contemporary the ambience feels.

Luckily, as decluttering is not only incredibly useful but also exceedingly popular, there are many helpful guides on how to start decluttering, which include:

  • Follow William Morris’s advice to only have beautiful or useful items in your home
  • Remember that your house isn’t one big storage unit
  • Divide your belongings into “Keep, donate, and throw away”
  • Start with one drawer and keep each day’s task in a small area

Replace & Update the Light Fixtures

You may well consider lighting fixtures to be irrelevant when wanting to modernize your home décor, but in actual fact, removing, replacing, and updating every single light fixture in the home, right through from small table lamps on the bedside tables to the central light in the living room will make a significant difference.

Examples of modern and contemporary light fixtures include triangular floor lamps, dome-shaped table lamps, copper fixtures, and downlights.

Biophilic Design

Biophilic design, a modern interior movement focused on bringing the outdoors inside, has a multitude of advantages, both for the value of your home and the modern design aesthetic, but also in the context of improving both your physical and emotional health.

If you’re intending on a thorough renovation of one or more of your rooms, you could start with the flooring and choose a limestone or marble, or else an ornate tiling (see this website for more information). For smaller biophilic design additions, you could consider the addition of a living wall of greenery in the hallway, a skylight in the master bedroom, or even a water feature in the living room (safely away from wires, of course).

Utilize Smart Technology

Another incredibly insightful consideration to truly modernize the entirety of your home and your garden is to introduce certain items of Smart technology.

There are numerous advantages to embracing technology in your home, not least the simple fact that your home will be much better protected against opportunistic thieves and cybercriminals, as well as giving you more control over your energy usage and, therefore, your energy bills.

The most popular items of Smart home devices include, among others, the following:

  • Smart thermostats
  • Smart plugs
  • Smart doorbells
  • Smart speakers

Use Bright & Bold Colour Schemes

Finally, and for a tip for modernizing your home that can be applied to every single room in your property, it’s time to make the move away from neutral décor and instead embrace bright and bold colours.

Now, even though you’re now free to choose the colours that best encapsulate what speaks to you when it comes to interior design, it’s still important to remember the golden mantra of modern design, which is to use colour sparingly. Instead of painting an entire wall in bright turquoise, for example, brighten and modernize a dark grey sofa with textured turquoise throws and cushions.
