You might live in the UK, but that doesn’t mean you don’t experience many hot and sunny days during the tail end of spring and throughout the summer months. As you can imagine, it can get quite hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching the late 20s and even early 30s.

With that in mind, the last thing you want to do is roast inside your home or spend much of your time submersed in cold water inside your bathtub! Thankfully, there are some practical steps you can take to cool down at home during summer. Here’s what you need to do:
Close your curtains when the sun is strong
You’ll have undoubtedly noticed that the sun is strongest first thing in the morning on one side of your house and moves across to the other as the day progresses. What you need to do is keep your curtains closed in rooms where the sun is at its strongest.
It might seem like a strange concept, but if you think about it, your curtains will help reflect the heat and light away from the rooms in question, keeping them cool throughout the day. You should also consider investing in blackout curtains for optimal effect.
Keep windows open in the coolest rooms
There’s no denying that letting fresh air circulate in your home helps to keep it healthy and ventilated. It’s also vital for keeping your rooms cool during the summer months. The thing is, how can you avoid letting warm or hot air circulate in your home?
Aside from keeping curtains closed in rooms where the sun is at its strongest, you must also keep the windows in those rooms shut. Instead, only open windows in the coolest rooms in your home.
Also, you can open some doors in the coolest rooms in your home as well. Consider buying some fly screens for doors that you leave open, so you don’t have any uninvited guests buzzing around your abode.
Invest in air conditioning
You might think that air conditioning is a bit overkill for the UK’s weather, seeing as it’s not hot very often. The truth is, the effects of global warming means that it’s getting warmer more often in Britain and throughout the world in general.
Still, there are other benefits to air conditioning that you can enjoy all year round. For example, air conditioning filters the air of allergens, making it helpful if you suffer from respiratory conditions like asthma.
Plus, a split air conditioning system is also practical if you’ve got a pet that you have to leave at home sometimes, and you want them to feel comfortable indoors when it’s warm.
Don’t use lights during the day
Finally, you should ensure that you don’t use any lights in your home during daylight hours unless absolutely necessary. That’s because the heat generated from the bulbs can increase the ambient air temperature inside your house. You may wish to upgrade to LED bulbs, as they’re far superior to CFL bulbs, reduce your electricity costs, and provide a sharper light, not to mention they don’t generate as much heat.

These are some really good tips, it’s so important to stay hydrated too!
Oh yes definitely!
I keep the blinds in our bedroom down now to keep it cool! The sun shines straight in all day otherwise. Could do with a couple of days of cool really!

Luckily our bedroom is in the shade all day. It still gets really warm though as we have a stone house and really traps all the heat in!
Great post! I try to remember to close my curtains when I go out in the day, but if I’m staying in I have to have them mostly open – otherwise, I would need a light on. The road can be so noisy (at uni) but I do love the fresh air. xx
Thanks. I always have to have the windows open. You can’t beat the fresh air coming through the house.
I absolutely loooove this heat but at night, it’s getting to be a bit of a killer. Your tips are excellent, keep everything cool and dark!

I’m the same, I can happily sit outside all day when the weathers nice. But I cannot cope with the heat during the night.
Typically, my bedroom gets the hottest room in the house in the Summer. I wish houses in the UK had aircon! We have about a hundred fans – some of them are excellent, which is good. I find keeping as many doors open to let air flow through if you can is a good idea as well! Definitely keeping curtains shut as well.
Having a fan in our bedroom has been a game changer for me. I don’t know what I’d do without one now!
Good points. I think summers will start to be more tropical with global warming.
Yes I think you’re probably right.
So simple but so effective! Thanks for the tips.
