Christmas as a singleton can be tough. While your single status may not bother you for the rest of the year being bombarded with romantic images of Christmas could be hard. From those holiday romance movies like Love Actually and The Holiday to your grandma asking when you’re going to find yourself a nice young man or lady to settle down with for the 100th time. Given that 2020 has been a pretty lonely year, the stress of single life could be taking its toll. Worry not though! Here’s how to survive Christmas when you’re single.

Talk to your family
There’s nothing quite like family to make you feel awkward about your love life is there?! If your relationship status isn’t something you want dominating the dinner table conversations then it might be wise to have a chat with your family beforehand so you’re all on the same page. Whether you’re a happy singleton, worried you’re not going to find the one or newly heartbroken. Make sure your family knows that you know they care and the questions come from a good place but it’s not a topic of conversation that needs to dominate Christmas dinner.
We all know questions such as “so when are you going to settle down?” come from the right place but the fact is you shouldn’t be under the spotlight if you’re not comfortable. It’s only the same as those awkward “when are you getting married?” or “when are you having a baby?” questions for couples. They mean well but they can actually be quite hurtful. So just explain your situation and hopefully you can pre-empt any conversations about being single. Chances are great auntie Margaret will probably forget though so in some situations you just have to go with the flow and have some answers banked for a reply!
Find local love
If you feel like heading back into the world of dating this Christmas to live out those festive romance fantasies then you may be worried about just how you can do that in the current climate. My best advice here is to stay local when it comes to dating. Local online dating like Dorset dating site (or your local area) will be your best friend at this time. With the current tier system in England meeting up may be tricky. If you live in an area where you can meet outdoors, local dating means that you’re not traveling between areas and you’ll know all the best spots to head to for a fun-filled festive date.
If you live in an area where you can’t currently meet then local Dorset dating (or your local area) will mean that when restrictions ease you won’t have barriers put in your way as you’ll both be in the same tier and can easily meet up. Local dating is a fantastic way to ease your way back into the world of romance and you never know, Mr or Mrs Right could be sat at the other side just waiting to meet someone like you!
See the positives
There’s no use in wallowing in your single status or getting down about the fact that currently going on a date isn’t quite like it used to be. Instead take this time to find the positives in your situation. Being single isn’t all that bad, especially if you’re not really ready for a relationship. And while yes, dating is quite different right now that isn’t a bad thing either. Take this time to get a little more creative with how you interact with potential matches and how you move forward. A few exchanged messages and a dinner date a couple of weeks later might have been the norm once but isn’t it good to switch up the formula every now and then?
While Zoom quizzes and everything been virtual might be getting boring there are actually some really cool ways to still date virtually that are definitely worth exploring. If you stick to my tip of dating locally too you could have some fun discussing future dates you’d like to go on once you can meet up. After all you’re both going to be clued up on the local area so should be able to think outside of the box when it comes to inventing fun date days and nights.
Maybe the old way of doing things wasn’t actually working out and this way you might just find that one person you want to kiss under the mistletoe. Well maybe when there isn’t a pandemic anyway!

I’m just going to scratch the family option entirely and replace it for single-inoculation: becoming immune to the holiday cheer by watching EVERY possible Hallmark movie xD
Being single ain’t too bad if you still live vicariously through over the top Americanised romance ๐๐คญ
Haha I love that!
This is so important! I’m happily single at the minute but at Christmas it would be nice to have someone to do festive things with haha – great post xx

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I get that, make sure you still do lots of festive things though!
There are definitely times of the year when being single can be more difficult than others! I’m in a relationship now, but before that I spent many Christmas’ without a partner- and I even broke off with someone a few days before Christmas one year! I think these are lovely ways to look out for yourself if you spend the holiday season as a singleton, and I loved reading your post. Stay safe and have a lovely Christmas x
Thank you so much! I bet that was hard just before Christmas.
Thank you for this reminder. It’s been years since I have been single at Christmas, but I remember how difficult it actually was. I had to stop watching romantic movies because they were making me depressed. These are great tips, and I wish I had read this years ago. ๐ Thanks for reminding me to invite my single friends out and not make everything couply as well. ๐
Oh thank you for your lovely comment I’m glad you enjoyed this posts and found it helpful.
I love this post. This year I will be single again. But unlikely other years, this year I just going to enjoy the festive period with my family and friends.

That’s great to hear!
Those questions are definitely annoying and can be hurtful. I never minded being single when I was, and I was for a loooong time. Sure, I wanted to meet “the one” but there was plenty in life I enjoyed and my best advice is to just enjoy yourself and to know that no matter what happens in your relationship status that your life is full and meaningful.
Exactly. I think any questions around relationships can be quite insensitive. I’ve been with my fiancรฉ 13 years but he didn’t propose until we’d been together for 11 years and the questions about when he’d pop the question drove us both crazy.
This is such a great post, being single at Christmas can be pretty lonely especially when you see everyone else loved up posts on social media. These are great tips about being positive and spending time with family and freinds.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
