How to add custom fonts to your blog

When it comes to using different fonts on your blog installing a custom font plugin could be the way to go. There’s a whole variety of reason for using custom fonts on your blog from helping you to stand out from the crowd to aligning your brand. If you’re looking for an easy way to use custom fonts than I’m going to be reviewing five custom font plugins. It is worth noting that plugins can only be used on self hosted WordPress.org sites and WordPress.com sites on the business plan.

WordPress does come with a wide variety of fonts available however if you’re looking to use font branding across your blog and social media then a plugin may be worth getting. A WordPress font plugin can also offer you a chance to stand out from the crowd with custom font headers that may look a little better than fonts you’d find on WordPress.

Getting the font just right

Before we get into talking about some great plugins that are available for custom fonts there are a few other things we should talk about first. Custom fonts are great but you have to keep in mind how they look for your reader. Yes it’s your blog so what you think looks good is still important. However it’s nowhere near as important as what looks good to your regular readers or your target audience. Any font you use should:

• be easy to read. If people can’t work out what your blog posts say they’ll just click off.
• fit with your blog and other fonts used. Some fonts clash you’ll need to make sure any font combinations compliment each other. Think about the overall look of your blog and your audience.
• Look good on desktop and mobile. Think about how your font looks in a variety of different ways, large, small, capitalised, lower case, on large screens and on small screens.

Fontsy

With the Fontsy WordPress plugin you can upload or select your own fonts as well as downloading a variety of fonts from their library. You can then select the fonts you want to use for any header type. There are premium fonts to purchase but for the most part it is a free plugin and occasionally some paid fonts come up for free on their marketplace.

Access almost 1,000 fonts from the Google Fonts library. This plugin included a live preview so you can see how your font combinations work together. SEO friendly and easy to use for headings and content fonts.

Upload your own fonts to use on your site. Simply upload the font in as many formats as possible to ensure browser compatibility and away you go!

Custom Adobe Fonts

Allows you to easily embed Adobe fonts in your WordPress site. If you use Adobe products from Pinterest and social media graphics this could be a good one to get everything matched up.

I had a play around with all of these plugins and they’re all super simple to use even for someone like me who can’t do anything when it comes to blog design! I didn’t run into any problems with them.
