7 of the best makeup tips for oily skin

Oily skin can a challenge to handle. While oily skin has the advantage of being less prone to fine lines and other signs of aging, this isn’t much comfort when you can’t get your makeup to stay on your face, and your forehead looks like an oil slick by lunchtime. If you’ve already got your skincare routine nailed, then here are some makeup tips for oily skin. Get your skincare right. Your makeup can only be as good as the foundation that you’re putting it on. Exfoliate weekly, and cleanse your face properly at least once a day. It’s a myth that oily skins don’t need moisture. In fact, dryness can cause oily skin to produce more oil as it tries to hydrate itself. Make sure you’re using a moisturiser as well.

The best makeup tips for oily skin

Get the right mascara

Wear waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara can be annoying to remove, and if not applied carefully, it can make your eyelashes clump. However, oily skin can encourage your mascara to slide, and you’ll end up with smeared around your eyes. Waterproof mascara will hang on, so use it if you want your lashes to look great all day long. To avoid the dreaded clumping, wiggle your mascara brush through your lashes as you apply it.

Use a primer

Use a mattifying primer. Before you apply your foundation use a primer that will mattify the skin. A primer helps your foundation to hold onto the skin, keeping it in place all day long. Find out more here about makeup formulated for oily skin types.

Powder your face

Set with powder. After you’ve put your primer on, set it onto your face with a translucent setting powder. The powder will absorb any excess oil and set your primer onto your face. Applying the powder before your foundation gives it something else to stick to, helping it stay on. You can use the powder to reset your makeup throughout the day as well if oil is creeping through.

Get the right foundation

Look for oil-free foundations that are long-wear. The last thing you need is more oil on your face, so look a long-wear foundation that is oil-free. A long-wear foundation is formulated with specially chosen ingredients that help it to last longer. Get used to reading ingredient lists to help you to find foundations that don’t contain oil.

Thin layers

Avoid thick layers. It can be tempting to pile on a thick layer of concealer or foundation. Thick layers can look cakey and will look even worse if oil starts to make it separate. Whether you’re going for light or full coverage, apply products like this in thin layers. For fuller coverage, still apply light layers, just layer on more of them. If you work like this, you can add a little more coverage where you need, and leave it lighter where you don’t.

Set it all in place

Use a setting spray. If you won’t be able to touch your makeup up throughout the day, set it with a setting spray before you leave the house. There are lots of great ones on the market that will hold your makeup in place.

I love that famous tik tok tip of powdering your face before putting liquid foundation on, I find that works quite well as I have very oily skin!

Great tips! I have combination skin. Oily T-zone but normal everywhere else. Trying to keep my oils at bay on my T-zone can be such a challenge

I don’t have really oily skin but I get quite oily throughout the day, I defo need to invest in a new primer I think, I love the Nip and Fab fixing mist though that always keeps my make up in place!

These are great tips! My face is oily in the warm months and dry in the winter months. I never seem to get a makeup routine down before it changes! Of course, I only wear makeup for YouTube occasionally at the moment…

Great tips! I definitely think thinner layers helps, and using translucent powder before and after your foundation also really helps, as it helps to sandwich your foundation in place! xo

You’re the second person to say powder before foundation and I’d never heard of this but I’m definitely going to be giving it a go!
