Just before the lockdown happened I was due for a cut and colour, obviously that didn’t happen and now like many women up and down the country I’m working out how best to care for my hair without resorting to an at home trim because let’s be honest must of us would make an absolute mess of our hair! I’ve come up with some handy tips on how to keep your hair healthy in lockdown.

I have fairly long hair with blonde balayage that was due for lightening just as the lockdown kicked in. It’s fair to say I’m pretty desperate for a trip to the hairdressers right now but I have been finding some ways to make sure I’m keeping my hair healthy because who knows when I’ll next get it cut. I personally cannot wait to go for that first cut and colour once we’re allowed to because my hair dresser is amazing and I know she’ll work her magic. If you’re in or around Manchester though and you need a miracle worker for your tresses after lockdown then try one of the top hairdressers Manchester.
Skip the washing
O.K. so most of us ladies know we shouldn’t be washing our hair every day but now is the time to really skip a few of those washes after all it’s not like we’re going anywhere or seeing anyone! I’d also advise against using dry shampoo at this time as it’s all about letting your natural oils do their thing. If you have a dry or sensitive scalp then constantly washing your hair will make it worse and dry shampoo will just irritate it further. Greasy hair isn’t a great look but if you start washing your hair less you’ll find that it will look fresher between washes for longer anyway. If you want to go out on your daily walk braids and top knots are great for hiding less than fresh hair.
Use natural products
Making the switch to more natural products rather than ones packed with chemicals is a great habit to get into. They’re much better for you and the environment and seen as our hair needs a little extra TLC right now you might as well make a start on using more natural products now. A lot of shampoos and conditioners are packed with chemicals; it’s what makes your shampoo foam and what gives you that initial silky feeling to your hair but the reality is they’re doing more harm than good. I’m a huge fan of the Lush shampoo bars, there’s no packaging and they last ages. There’s lot to choose from and my hair always feels amazing after using one of these. I much prefer the shampoo bars to traditional shampoos these days.
Reach for the coconut oil
While there are many masks and oils out there for your hair much like all your other products, they’re packed with chemicals. Pure coconut oil will be your saviour. You can pick up a tub of coconut oil super cheap and you can use it on your scalp and hair to keep it super soft and shiny. I like to apply it all over and leave it on for as long as possible. Just make sure you wash and rinse your hair really well to get all of the oil out.
Go au natural
Now is the time to ditch all the heat, pack away the curling wand and the hair dryer and embrace your natural hair. With nowhere to go and no one to see it really doesn’t matter what your hair looks like! By ditching the styling tools and heat it will really give your hair a break from everything that’s bad for it. When you can, leave your hair to dry naturally and don’t bother with any heat styling tools.
Keep your colour fresh
If you normally head to the salon for your hair colouring the temptation to do it yourself may be starting to creep in. If you’re blonde I honestly would not recommend doing it yourself and I’m speaking from experience here. I used to bleach my own hair and eventually I had to cut it super short because of the damage it did. Use products specifically designed for blonde hair to keep it looking as bright as possible. A good purple shampoo and conditioner will keep brassy tones at bay. For non blondes if you can’t resist the temptation to colour it go for a semi-permanent dye so it’s less harsh and will just fade out naturally. Once salons are back open again you’ll be able to go for your normal colour without any at home disasters needing fixing too!
While it’s not ideal that we can’t go for our regular hair appointments hopefully these tips will help you keep your hair healthy in the lockdown.
How are you keeping your hair healthy now we can’t go to the hairdressers? Let me know in the comments.

I’m definitely washing my hair a lot less than I used to! We just don’t NEED to right now, do we? And with the warmer weather, I’m letting it dry more naturally 🙂
