20 of the best cheap Christmas date ideas

4 December 2017 Comments : 10

I don’t know about anyone else but I love Christmas dates, I mean don’t get me wrong, a date at any time of the year is lovely but there’s something extra special about those festive tinged, snuggly dates in December. However we all know Christmas is an expensive time which means things like this might take a bit of a back seat but I’ve come up with a list of cheap Christmas date ideas to see you through the month and keep the romance alive.

cheap Christmas date ideas

1. Grab a festive coffee

What better way to catch up with each other though than heading to your local coffee shop on a cold day and having a chat over a suitably Christmas drink and a slice of something sweet?!  We all know Starbucks and Costa release some pretty tasty festive drinks but trying checking out some independent coffee shops too.

2. Go to a Christmas market

There’s Christmas markets all over the country so it’s really not too hard to find one close by. You don’t have to buy anything really, sometimes it’s just nice to soak up the atmosphere whilst surrounded by twinkling fairy lights and the smell of roasting chestnuts and mulled wine with Christmas carol’s playing in the background.

3. Bake some festive treats

Christmas and baking just seem to go hand in hand don’t they? There’s so many yummy treats that you can whip up at this time of year so why not head to the kitchen together and create something delicious that you can sit down with later on and enjoy during my next date idea…

4. Have a Christmas movie night

Grab a blanket, put on your cosy pj’s and watch a Christmas movie or two. I highly recommend enjoying this with a large hot chocolate and marshmallows and maybe some of those sweet treats from the above idea.

5. Go on a crisp walk

I love going out for walk on cool and crisp but sunny days. So why not wrap up warm and head out around your local area. It’s completely free, healthy and a great way to spend sometime together away from all distractions like phones and the TV.

6. Grab some after work drinks

At this time of year, lots of places bring out the mulled goods and festive ales. I know Wetherspoons in particular are good for this (and probably one of the cheapest places!). Josh and I sometimes like to head to the pub on a Friday after work and we always end up talking more than drinking, and we’ll definitely be heading out over the festive season for some mulled cider!

7. Go Christmas decoration shopping

I don’t know about anyone else but I love going out to different places to look at Christmas displays and decorations. You could even make a bit of a day of it and combine a few of these ideas by going decoration browsing then calling for a festive coffee and rounding the day off with a Christmas movie.

8. Go ice skating

I always find the idea of ice skating quite romantic. The reality is I’d probably spend most of my time on my bum! There are usually lots of outdoor skating rinks to be found as Christmas approaches so head to a local one and enjoy helping each other stay on two feet!

9. See a Christmas lights display

Whether it’s in your local town or something a little fancier like a stately home, Christmas light displays can be found almost anywhere. Seek out one or two in the festive season and enjoy looking at all the twinkling lights and Christmas trees.

10. At home spa night

Avoid festive burnout and pamper yourselves at home. Light some candles, have a bubble bath and indulge in some face masks and other treatments. It’s the perfect way to relax in what can be a very busy period.

11. Build a snowman

When was the last time you built a snowman or made a snow angel? If you’re lucky enough to see snow in December then it’s the perfect time to get a little silly together and have some fun. Either build a snowman together or have a competition to see who can build the best snowman. Finish it off by making snow angels before heading back inside to get warm.

12. Do a pub quiz

Find a cosy pub (one the preferably does festive drinks too) and take part in a pub quiz. We love pub quiz date nights and cosy feeling pub is even better to set the festive mood. It doesn’t matter if you’re not any good at pub quizzes, that just makes it even funnier.

13. Have a games night

Board games are usually reserved for playing with the family on Christmas Day. However it’s a great way to switch off from the TV and your phone and just spend some time in each others company. Just because there’s only two of you doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. There are plenty of board games out there designed for just two players. Have some snacks to hand and a few drinks and enjoy a technology free date night.

14. Toast marshmallows

Wrap up warm and toast some marshmallows. If you have a firepit of chimnea in your garden you can snuggle around it while making this tasty snack. Keep at as just marshmallows or you could even have a go at making s’mores.

15. Have an indoor picnic

Indoor picnics are one of my favourite things. If you’ve never had one I definitely recommend giving it a go. Plus have you seen all the amazing party food that comes out at Christmas?! Indoor picnics are great all year round but festive party food picnics are something special!

16. Decorate a gingerbread house

We had a go at decorating a gingerbread house together last year and we had such a fun afternoon. Mainly because we were terrible and it looked nothing like the picture. Gingerbread house kits are fairly inexpensive and come with everything you need to decorate. The worse you are at it, the funnier it is.

17. Go on a Christmas lights walk

Is there a particular street in your town or village that goes all out with decorations? Or maybe there’s a house that supersizes it’s outdoor decorations for charity. Take a walk around your neighbourhood and see how many beautifully decorated houses you can spot.

18. Start a new Christmas tradition

I’m a sucker for a good Christmas tradition and we have a fair few of our own. If you don’t really have any Christmas traditions as a couple, make this the year to set some in place. It could be absolutely anything. It’s so fun to repeat your traditions each year and they’ll always have a special place in your heart.

19. Make your own advent calendars

We’ve had a reusable advent calendar for a couple of years now and it’s always nice to sneek something a bit more special than sweets or chocolate into the final day.

20. Read Christmas books together

Have your own mini festive book club. Pick out some old Christmas favourites from your childhood or read something new. Just make sure you both read the same thing at the same time then discuss the book when you’ve both finished.

So there you go, 20 Christmas date ideas that won’t break the bank but will keep the festive season feeling romantic.

Yes definitely. Even though this was written a few years ago now they’re definitely still good to do in the current climate.

All your ideas are great and pretty inexpensive. Grabbing a coffee, wander at a Christmas market, I mean each and everyone is fun and simple to do. My favorites are inside picnic, walking, and making a new tradition. Thanks, Lauren, for sharing such fun date ideas.💖
