Book Review: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier
now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a
husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry
grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest
son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never
wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn
the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected
places.

I actually pre-ordered this last year but it arrived just as we were packing up and getting ready to move house so it got packed away with everything and then placed on the bookshelf with all my other Harry Potter books and kind of forgotten about. 

After reading the Fantastic Beasts screenplay earlier this year and really enjoying it, the fact this is a script didn’t bother me as I knew I’d get on with the format. For someone who is a slow reader, I raced through this book. I actually find screenplays and scripts to be quick and easy reads but I was enjoying it so much I couldn’t put it down. It was so great to be transported back to the world I’ve always loved with a fresh and exciting new adventure. The book is full of the characters and places Harry Potter fans love but it doesn’t feel like wizarding world is being dragged out for the sake of it, there’s a definite place for it in the world of Harry Potter.

The story expands on where the final book left off, Albus Severus Potter is off to Hogwarts, not only does he have the struggles of any normal teenage boy but he has the worry of where he’ll fit in at Hogwarts as well as dealing with having a famous dead that he feels he can’t live up to. Whatever Albus does he can’t seem to get it right. Both he and Harry have to learn the hard way how to get along and except each others differences as the fate of the wizarding world as they know it rests in both their hands.

I cannot recommend this enough, it’s such a great story and filled my heart with the joy that all the old Harry Potter novels still bring me.
