Psychological Evaluations: How Do They Work?

23 February 2024 Leave a Comment

A psychological evaluation is an important step to assessing an individual’s mental and emotional state. The insight provided by this evaluation provides detailed information towards treatment, and can help professionals create an optimized plan of action. Each test is specific, so it is important to go into the evaluation with an open mind.

What To Know

When you get treatment for mental health disorders, confidentiality is at its highest. This is probably the biggest worry of anyone that is heading into a psychological evaluation. The test is not meant to be a judgement, but instead acts as an overall understanding of your wellbeing. Some of the process involves standardized tests, interviews, questionnaires and even observation. It is all based on personal needs, and the current health concerns of the patient. If there are any questions before starting, you have the full right to know the procedures or purpose. Depending on the source of the evaluation, informed consent by the individual is required before beginning.

Personal Diagnostic

A personal evaluation begins with an initial assessment to gather information about symptoms, psychosocial backgrounds and medical history. This is how professionals build a profile to decide which tests or methods would be the most optimized. If additional information is required, you’ll be asked upfront before proceeding. An important thing to point out is the DSM-5 criteria. This is the standardized criteria that the American Psychiatric Association uses to classify mental disorders. By the end of the evaluation, the DSM-5 will provide detailed information about the symptoms or behaviors that stand out.

Career Assessments

A lot of workers feel blindsided when they have to take a test to get a job. This gets even more complicated when they get a job, but are then required to take a test long after being hired. For your career, this could be something like the Wonderlic test. Technically, there are no wrong answers to the test. The Wonderlic has more to do with company culture fit than getting the right answers. Outside of this test, there are plenty of other assessments that have become popularized by companies that want to improve their workforce. For high school or college students, career planning works best with assessments. A psychological evaluation is a great way to point out wants, needs, strengths and weaknesses for every career in existence.

Treatment Planning

When a professional goes through the details of your mental health, things can get scary. But that is the appropriate reaction of someone that wants to get better! Treatments are life-changing decisions that require a collaborative approach. Goals are unique, and completely reachable with a positive mindset. Follow-ups will monitor progress and help to strengthen any weak areas you may have when dealing with the new adjustments. Adjustments take time, so there will never be a push or time-limit to cause extra stress.

A Helpful Point of View

There are many helpful tools that play a role in guiding the treatment planning of mental and emotional issues. A psychological evaluation is one of the most important of those tools, so approach it with a positive attitude. Accuracy is important with mental health care, and continues to get better with time.
