Finding My Confidence

Something a little bit different on Bits and Bobs today. I’m brushing aside wishlists, reviews and money saving ideas for today to talk about confidence. Tonight I’m going to a graduate fashion show at my university, I was given a complimentary ticket after writing an article on a third year fashion student for a university magazine. When I received the email I didn’t think anything of it but then I realised I would actually be quite interested in going but one thing stood in the way, I’d have to go on my own.
I did print the ticket off but it’s taken me all week to decide whether to go or not because quite frankly the thought of been there on my own amongst lots of fashion students and people I don’t know is scaring the sh*t out of me. I’d love to tell you why it is that I have a such a problem with doing things on my own and meeting new people but I honestly don’t know the answer!
Around Josh and my friends and family I can actually be quite a loud person, but once I’m in a situation where I have to talk to people I don’t know I just close up, I’ve always been the same. When I have to go to things on my own or speak to new people I find
myself getting incredibly nervous and clammy. I get really worried and
quite scared of been in a new situation on my own. I remember when my parents used to go to parent’s evenings when I was a kid or read my school reports and they used to laugh at all the comments about me been shy and quiet because they couldn’t believe it.
Now as a journalism and English student, lacking in confidence and been shy really isn’t the greatest trait to have and I do think I’m getting better at doing things myself, just the other week I attended an architecture degree show and interviewed several people about it, on my own. To a lot of people that really won’t seem like a big thing but for me it was and I felt really proud afterwards that I’d done it.
I decided to attend tonight’s fashion show because I really need to get over the fear of been on my own and meeting new people, I really wanted to go to it and my shyness was going to stand in the way and stop me from doing something that I really wanted to do. This isn’t going to be an instant cure but for me tonight marks a big step in the right direction so I’m determined to go and really enjoy the night.

Good on you! I know exactly what you mean, with friends I can chat for England but as soon as I'm with other people I run out of things to say, I feel like I should have been taught some basic conversation starters, something to get me going. I'm super proud of you and I'm sure you'll have a great time – if all else fails, head for the bar! (That's my usual tactic) xxxx

Aaww thanks! 🙂 that was my thinking with the bar too, the fashion show is in the SU so there'll be no shortage of drink! xxx

I have exactly the same problem but I found that the more things I go to on my own and the more people I meet I tend to get better at talking to people I don't know and making conversation. I still do find it hard sometimes but doing things like that do help a lot. 🙂 x
