Common Mistakes That Drivers Make

Driving is a task that demands full attention and responsibility. It’s easy to get into habits or make small mistakes that can compromise your safety or the safety of others. Whether you’re a seasoned driver or a new one, the road is full of challenges that require focus.

Sometimes, we overlook basic practices, believing we’re in control. However, certain driving habits can lead to dangerous situations or costly errors.

Understanding and addressing common mistakes can help you become a better driver, ensuring your time on the road is both safe and efficient.

Poor Steering Control

Your steering wheel is your direct link to the road, so maintaining precise control is essential. A common mistake is gripping the wheel too tightly or loosely. A firm yet relaxed grip provides the best responsiveness.

Overcorrecting or jerking the wheel can cause skidding, especially in wet conditions. If you struggle to maintain control, consider a steering alignment or adjusting your technique.

Misjudging Gaps and Distances

Accurately judging the space between your vehicle and others is critical. Misjudging distances when merging, reversing, or parking can lead to costly damage and even accidents.

Always leave more space than necessary to allow for sudden changes. Use all mirrors and check blind spots, especially when reversing, and consider using parking sensors if available.

Failure to Signal Properly

Signalling when on the roads isn’t just a courtesytowards other drivers or pedestrians – it’s a legal requirement. Many drivers fail to signal or do so too late, which confuses others and increases the risk of accidents. Not only is this dangerous, but it can also result in drivers being fined up to £5,000 and receiving 3-9 penalty points on their license.

Always signal well in advance of any turn or lane change. Being predictable makes the road safer for everyone.

Improper Insurance Cover

Having the right insurance protects you financially. Some drivers assume they have enough coverage but fail to update their policies, especially after changing vehicles.

Ensure your policy is current and adequately covers all your vehicles. For those with multiple cars, a multi-car insurance policy can save you money while providing necessary coverage.

Avoid skimping on insurance, as the cost of inadequate coverage can be far more expensive if you were to need to make a claim at any point in the future. Ensure that you take the time to shop around on comparison sites when it’s time to renew your policy to get the best deal possible.

Improper Lane Discipline

Lane discipline is key for safe driving. Drifting between lanes or not staying in your lane, especially on motorways, increases collision risk.

Always stay in the left lane unless overtaking, anduse signals and check blind spots when changing lanes. Proper lane discipline ensures smoother traffic flow and reduces accidents.
