Wedding stationary is super expensive. Of course you want to create beautiful wedding invites that wow your guests and give them a feel for your big day but the harsh reality is that wedding stationary can make a big dent in your budget and most of your guests will throw away or misplace their invite. So how do you DIY your own wedding invites and still create something beautiful?
Now a lot of couples, like myself, have had to postpone their wedding and may be having to send invites for the second or even the third time. I want my invites to look beautiful but being a small budget bride I also don’t want to spend a fortune on stationary. The first set of invites we sent were made by us and we plan on sending DIY wedding invitations to our guests again for our new wedding date. So today I thought I’d share some tips with you on how to make your own wedding invitations when you’re on a budget!
Set a budget
First off set a budget for what you’d like to spend on your wedding invites. It’s quite easy to get carried away with lots of fancy design ideas only to realise when you’ve fallen in love with something that it costs way more than what you wanted to spend. So set how much you want to spend altogether on your invites. Don’t forget to include things like envelopes and stamps too.
If you want to cut back on costs and you have a wedding website then you could look at leaving RSVP cards out of your invites and ask people to RSVP via your wedding website instead.
Gather ideas
Take a look at some existing designs and think about how you can put your own spin on it. Gather your ideas into a mood board that contains colours, theme, decoration ideas and any personal touches you want. Here’s the place to think about whether you want things like extra information cards, menu’s and RSVP cards as well as the finer details such as whether you want the invites housed in a jacket style holder or tied together with ribbon.
Once you’ve created a mood board of everything you love then you can start thinking about the elements you really want for your day and come up with a second board that’s narrowed down to how you want your invites to look.
Get your supplies
Once you’ve gathered ideas for your perfect looking invite. It’s time to get making! I’d definitely advise ordering more than what you need so you can have a few practice runs to get any mistakes out of the way and to fine tune your design as it’s only when you actually start making your invites that you know what’s going to work and what isn’t. There’s a lot of beautiful card making supplies out there now so being able to find everything you need to make your own wedding invites (and make them look professional) isn’t that hard.
As well as all the pretty bits like embellishements and ribbon make sure you have the right tools too. A good sharp pair of scissors and some strong glue will definitely be required to make your DIY wedding invites.

Making your own wedding invites can save you a fortune. If you are looking to cutback on weddings costs then this can be a great area to compromise on a little as it’s totally possible to create beautiful wedding invites yourself for a fraction of the cost. Here are my final top tips for making your own wedding invites:
- Remember your budget – you’re making your own invites to save money so always keep your budget in mind.
- Practice, practice, practice – don’t just jump straight into making your invites for your guests. Especially if you’re not a particularly crafty person. Practice a few times to get your design spot on.
- The little details make them unique – the small details such as a texture envelope or a laser cut jacket can set your envelopes apart and make them look really nice.
- Have fun with it – wedding planning can be stressful, especially right now. But I’m a firm believer in having fun with your wedding planning. So make this an activity you do as a couple over a few evenings and just enjoy it!
Personally I loved having wedding invites that we’d designed ourselves. It just made them feel a bit more unique and special which is why we’re going for the DIY invite option again. It allows us to make exactly what we want and come up with something that perfectly represents us and our wedding day.
