Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.

Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.

One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.

Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?
Upon release, Eleanor Oliphant was one of those books that just absolutely took off, it won numerous awards, got raved about reader after reader and was on everyone's to-be-read list. This instantly put me off, I tend to find that books that have received so much hype can't live up to the expectation that's been built up around them, I've been disappointed too many times with popular books so I stayed well clear. Eventually I added it to my Kindle with the thought of getting around to reading it at some point. One sunny afternoon I was ready to settle down with a new book and this one popped up, I refreshed myself of the blurb and lets be honest, the blurb doesn't make it sound all that interesting I don't think so I tentatively decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. I finished it in a day, that's that fastest I've ever read a book.

Eleanor's life is all neatly laid out, she has a routine and sticks to it no matter what. She completes a crossword every lunch, speaks to her mother on the phone once a week and downs two bottles of vodka every weekend before starting the routine all over again. But when that routine is thrown out after helping a stranger and falling for a rock star, Eleanor is forced to look at the real reason she needs order and routine in her life and why a change might actually just work out for the better.

I don't think I have the words to describe just how much I loved this book, all I can say is believe the hype because this is just such a heartwarming, humbling story that I couldn't put down. I felt like I was with Eleanor every step of the way and although she's a difficult character to warm to at first you soon find yourself completely endeared by her. I didn't see the ending coming at all even though there's hints along the way the big twist was still a surprise to me and perfectly tied everything together. Just writing this review is making me want to go back and live my life wrapped in the book for another day. I'm normally one for action packed thrillers with twits galore but when I say this book moves along at a steady pace I mean it in the nicest possible way because I just couldn't put it down it flowed that smoothly I just needed to keep reading.

I completely fell in love with this book and with Eleanor. If like me you've had your doubts then push all that to one side and grab a copy ASAP, you won't be disappointed. Although I still don't think the blurb does a good job of hooking the reader in I can see why it was written like that now after reading the book so I'd say not to be too quick to dismiss it based on what's on the back. All I can say is it's a wonderful, original story, that's heartwarming, sad at times, funny and well written.
