If you have a ton of old furniture lying around the home, then you may think that it is time to buy some new pieces. This can cost a small fortune, especially if you want to opt for solid wood or even marble. Luckily, there are ways for you to get around this, by transforming your old furniture into something new and unique, at half the price.

Choosing your piece

Before you begin your upcycling project, you need to decide what you want to get started with, and why. You may have some old furniture in storage or even something lying around the home that needs a new lease of life. If this is the case, then make sure that it is structurally sound for whatever you want to use it for. Check for woodworm, and other signs of rot too, as this can save you a ton of money in the future.

That distressed look

One of the best places for you to start is actually with cupboards and cabinets. Sand down the furniture before applying paint. You might also want to think about using chalk paint, as this means that you don’t need to prepare the surface. When you have applied the paint, you need to go over it once more with some sandpaper. This will add real character to your pieces and it is also great if you want to get a distressed edge look. To do this, simply use a different colour as your undercoat, and wear down the top layer of paint until the parts you want are exposed. To upgrade things even more, consider investing in some furniture fixings.

Stencilling

Stencilling is a fantastic way for you to add a personal touch to your piece. It may be daunting at first, but don’t worry. You can always paint over it and start again. When you have some stencils, you can easily get more creative with the furniture you have, and you can also label it according to whose room it is going in.

Upholstering

Think about it, do you have some old curtains or even some old sheets lying around your home? Maybe they are gathering dust and you want to put them to good use. Either way, you can easily transform a chair that is no longer of any use to your family by simply removing the old fabric. You can also then re-upholster it by using the new fabric to make your chair look brand new. You may even find that you enjoy it and that you start taking on bigger projects as a result. If you are struggling then a staple gun is your best friend here.

Countertops

A lot of people don’t think that they can upgrade their countertops because they are too worried about messing something up. Self-adhesive vinyl is a fantastic way for you to boost the appearance of your lining shelves and drawers, not to mention that it can be applied quickly. You can wipe it clean, and it’s usually heat resistant too, so cleaning up becomes way easier.
