Fright Night

Today is Halloween! For the past few years Josh and I have usually just carved a few pumpkins and watched a film on Halloween, however now we're back living with our parents pumpkin carving was kind of off the list. So last night we decided to have our own little Halloween celebration seen as we're not together for the actual event. We watched the scary films Sinister and Nothing Left to Fear (we also watched Child's Play, the one with Chuckie, on Tuesday but it wasn't really scary! It was more funny than anything!) and ate spooky inspired snacks, oh and I may have insisted on a few decorations as well as burning the Yankee Candle Halloween candy corn wax tart (it smells so good!) in all it was a pretty perfect night in!

BOOKS: Project Bookshelf

I am a self confessed book lover however I'm also not the worlds quickest reader, I like to take my time with a book so it's unlikely that I'm ever going to be the sort of person that finishes a book in a day. A couple of Christmas' ago I received a Kindle. I know a lot of book lovers shun Kindles in favour of physical copies of books and I was the same which is why I'd never bought a Kindle for myself, however now I have one I wouldn't be without it. That been said I do still like to read proper books and I have a bookshelf full of books that I really need to get through! So I've tucked away my Kindle for now in an attempt to get through some of the books on my shelves and that's where project bookshelf comes in... as I like to do book reviews on here I thought it would be fun to do something else book related too. So I'll do doing updates every now and then on how I'm progressing with reducing the size of my book collection. I'm not one for deciding in advance what I'll be reading over the coming months seen as my book collection is quite big but there are definitely a few that are at the top of the list which I think will be getting read before anything else.

Morrie: In His Own Words - I love the book Tuesday with Morrie, it's one of if not my favourite ever book so I can't wait to read this.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - I've seen the film and really enjoyed it but I never got round to reading the book, I think now is the time.

The Angels Game - I recently read the Shadow of the Wind of which The Angels Game is the prequel to, I'm a big fan of Zafon's writing and can't wait to get stuck into this.

Apartment 16 - I've read one of Nevill's books before and wasn't that blown away by it, this one sounds a little bit more up my street and I think it's only right I read something I bit scary around Halloween!

Let project bookshelf commence!

DAYS OUT: Brodsworth Hall in Autumn

On Sunday me, my dad, stepmum and niece went to Brodsworth Hall, we've all been a few times before but decided it would be nice to have a wander through the garden's now autumn is here. The whole place was filled with autumnal colours and it looked so pretty. Of course I took some photo's of all the beautiful leaves and a mushroom that looked like it had come straight out of a cartoon!
I love autumn and had been wanting to get some pretty photo's of the season for a while so I'm glad we visited Brodsworth Hall!

Happy List #94

Long time no Happy List, it really doesn't feel like a month since I last did one of these posts. I think a small catch up is in order first. There's no major news over here, still job hunting and still as fed up as ever of going to the job centre but lets not focus on that. The last few weeks have been filled with lots of walks, staying at Josh's for two weeks whilst his parents were away, Christmas shopping and treating myself to a few autumn/winter pieces (hello Lush Christmas stuff and pretty candles!)
I came back from Josh's a couple of days ago after spending two weeks there which was nice as it's been strange to go from living together for three years to only spending two nights a week together. We've enjoyed lots of walks, tv series and films and I've been enjoying an abundance of cuddles from his cat Lexi, I was just about ready to pop her in my bag and bring her back home with me! Whilst I stayed at his we decided (well I did) to do a spot of Christmas shopping and treat myself to a few things as well, I'm going to try and do a haul video over the next few weeks so look out for that.
So onto the pictures...

My first ever salted caramel hot chocolate, it was so good / Spotted this Breaking Bad cookie whilst shopping / They look like we've just caught them doing something they shouldn't be! / Paul MCCartney's new album - New which is really good

Walking along disused rail tracks / Lexi eating my camera when we tried to take photo's of her / Night time Lexi strokes! / A walk around Newmillerdam

Let me know what's been making you happy recently!

Sunday, 13 October 2013

A few days ago Josh and I went for a walk around Newmillerdam, which is a lake and country park not too far from Josh's. I used to go a lot when I was a kid but it's been a long time since I visited so Josh and I thought it would be nice to have a walk around together seen as it's only a short bus ride from his house. It was freezing and there were lots of crunchy leaves on the floor, autumn has really started! We fed the ducks and I got chased by geese, which I have to say wasn't a pleasant experience, the second to last photo doesn't even begin to show the sheer terror I felt! We then went to warm up with a nice mug of a hot chocolate (for me) and tea (for Josh) in a cafe.

Lauren's Lists: Things to look forwards to in Autumn/Winter

The topic for this Lauren's Lists is... Things to look forwards to in Autumn and Winter.

  1. Big cosy jumpers
  2. Large mugs of hot chocolate with marshmallows on top
  3. Chunky boots with super cosy tights
  4. Crunchy red leaves falling from the trees
  5. Walks in the autumn/winter sun all wrapped up
  6. Bonfire night
  7. Carving pumpkins
  8. Burning warming, spicy wax tarts
  9. Christmas shopping
  10. Putting up Christmas decorations
  11. Muppets Christmas Carol
  12. Red lipstick and nail polish
  13. Fluffy pj's and onsies
  14. Lush Snow Fairy
  15. Mine and Josh's anniversary
Although I do like the summer sun, the period between the end of September to the end of December is definitely my favourite time of the year. My love of the cold weather disappears after Christmas but during those three months I love the colder weather, the darker nights and excitement surrounding Christmas. I don't think I'll ever get bored of the warm, excited, fuzzy feeling I get during this time!

Don't forget I'd love it if you joined in with this feature so let me know what you look forwards to in Autumn/Winter or leave me a link to you post. You can view previous Lauren's Lists here.

BOOKS: Mini Book Reviews #5

I have another 4 mini book reviews for you today, if you want to have a look at the previous book reviews you can do so here. If you would like to read my book reviews in full then head over to my professional blog here. The four books I'll be reviewing today are: The Love of my Life,  Her Fearful Symmetry, The World According to Bob and The Shadow of the Wind.

The Love of my Life by Louise Douglas
I'm not a big fan of love stories so I wasn't sure that this would be my kind of book however this focuses on lots of different kinds of relationship such as affairs, marriage and mother and daughter relationships so it added a more complex element to the novel. The book perfectly explores the main characters relationships with the rest of the characters and doesn't scrimp on details and descriptions which allows the reader to really sympathise with her after her husband dies at a young age. If like me you're not a fan of this genre usually I'd recommend making an exception for this book!
Full review here.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
This book was such a disappointment that I don't even know where to begin with the review. The premise seemed to offer something interesting and unusual however in reality the novel was boring and failed to grab my attention. I don't mind fantasy elements in books but in this story it just didn't work and made the whole thing so far fetched it verged on ridiculous. The only reason I kept reading was so I could review it so I think many people would give in with this book. The twist come far too late in the novel and only brought excitement to the story for a short period of time.
Full review here

The World According to Bob by James Bowen
The sequel to A Street Cat Named book, this book continues the adventures of James and Bob. It follows pretty much the same pattern as the first book in that the story is woven together through snippets of James' past, how he is turning his life around in the present and tales of Bob and how he's helping James to get his life on track. You can't help but love Bob and want to find out more about James too. It's a real feel-good heart melting book!
Full review here.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Having previously read and enjoyed a young adult novel by Zafón is was very interested to see what this adult novel would be like. It easily has to be one of the most beautifully written books I've read in a while, the plot lines are intense and intricate, there's a hint of a dark Gothic element and even a touch of humour now and then. The novel has quite a large number of key characters which is usually something that I find off putting, however in this book it works really well with each character adding something different to the novel to provide more twists and turns. I can't wait to read the other two books that go with this one.

The Loving Lately List #4

It's time to share the love again with my list of lovelies from around the internet. Enjoy!

I love that autumn pictures are popping up all over Pinterest now, I can't wait for walks among crunchy red leaves, big mugs of hot chocolate and cosy jumpers.

I have two offerings from Alice this week as they're both such good posts in different ways. First up was this post Caitlin Moran's letter to her daughter which was a lovely thing to read so I'm glad she posted that! Secondly was this post where she discussed having divorced parents as an adult which is something I could really relate to.

Jennie always posts some really lovely things and this post was no different. I hope to take a leaf out of her book and stop worrying so much about things and just be content.

In keeping with the positive vibe this post from Kate is one I'll be reading over and over and implementing some of her advice. I'm a naturally pessimistic person, a worrier and a stress head so I'm definitely going to be using some of her tips to hopefully become a more positive person who doesn't worry all the time.

Megan shared a few snippets of her recent wedding and she looks beautiful. Congratulations!

In the last loving lately list a shared a video of a cat in shark costume riding a hoover. This time I've gone one better a cat in a shark costume riding a hoover and chasing a duck! Watch it here.

This then and now photo of my favourite place ever, The Cavern in Liverpool.

Thankful Thursday

I know in my first Thankful Thursday post last week I said I wouldn't be posting these every week (and I won't) but when you have some nice positivity going on it's good to make a note of these things!

Lauren and Lexi cuddles!

This week I am thankful for...

Pizza and a good catch up with my best friend. Spending the afternoon with her equals instant good mood.
Family gatherings at Josh's house. My family doesn't really get together for big gatherings so even after nearly six years the novelty of such occasions at Josh's hasn't worn off.
Finding a really good, new face cleanser.
Lunch with my stepdad.
A new snuggly, supersoft jumper. I can't wait to wear it when it gets really cold!
An unplanned stay at Josh's house.
The Boots Christmas gift guide, I get so excited when that comes out. I've already looked at it loads!

Tuesday Treats #34

Although I did my big Autumn/Winter wishlist at the start of September I haven't done a Tuesday Treats post since May, I really didn't think it had been that long! Anyway after browsing around a couple of nights ago I came across some lovely stuff on the H&M website. I'm going shopping in a couple of weeks, mainly to do some Christmas shopping but I've decided to treat myself to a few things too as money as quite tight at the moment it will probably be the last time I do any real shopping for myself this year. I'd like to get a few pieces to freshen up my Autumn/Winter wardrobe without spending too much money and H&M have some lovely basic things in at the moment.

  1. The two packs of earrings are such a bargain and I can't resist that cat pair in the second pack!
  2. I've wanted a stripe top for ages as I think teaming one with some skinny jeans, a chunky cardi and some cosy boots would make a really simple but nice Autumn outfit
  3. I have the same cardi in a rust colour which I bought I couple of years ago, I practically live in it during Autumn and Winter so I'd love to get another colour in it
  4. I can't believe these trousers are only £7.99 I'm not too sure if they'd suit me but I'd definitely try them
  5. I'm in desperate need of some new leggings, I've bought my last couple of pairs from Topshop but these ones are half the price so when I go shopping I'll be checking out the quality of these
  6. I've never tried H&M nail polishes but I love the looks of these two so I'll trying to find them when I go shopping
